I hear it fairly frequently. But it's usually from people a generation or two older than I am. I also live in a place with a big German population that still sticks to a fairly traditional diet.My father in law.

A friend's father. But it wasn't always older guys. I worked for a guy who ate out EVERY night--and it was always beef--preferably steak and potatoes--and he couldn't have been more than 5 or 6 years older than I was--at the time, about 50, maybe.

I think it's more apt to be a generational thing--and starting with those of us who grew up in the 60's, a bunch of different things (like the processed food cultural changes, and the foreign foods fixed at home changes that started with Julia C and many more foreigh restaurants, and a bigger percentage of the population that came from a wider variety of backgrounds) began to make serious inroads in the kind of plain cooking that I grew up on. SO we probably ARE hearing it less--and fewer people are proud of saying it--and those older generations are getting older and older... I think the phrase will be less and less common--and younger generations may actually have to stop to figure out what it means. Here it is. VEGETARIAN meat and potatoes?! I'd like to SEE that one.

Most People Are Back in the early 1900, the meal that was approved by doctors and other health officials were the "meat and potato meal" it consisted of beef, pork ,lamb, anything that walked 4 legs on the ground, with a side of potato's and vegetables. This was way before they had advanced into today's healthy meals. There was no food pyramids, So it was just the norm.My son was raised on the "meat and potato diet" when he married his wife made chicken and pasta, loads of it, my son told me one time how he missed a thick steak.

So the next time I talked to her I let her know he was raised on the meat and potato meals with veggies on the side. The next time the went shopping she had him go with her to pick out the food for the carnivore in him. Most anyone raised before the 1970's has that food mentality.

Took me years to change to the new improved, by the health field on what they considered healthy.

My hubby was a meat and potatoes man. The phrase "Meat and Potato Man" referred to someone that preferred meat and potatoes as the main dishes for their meals. It didn’t matter what kind of meat or how the potatoes were cooked, just as long as they were on the menu.

A "meat and potato man" didn’t mind eating salad or other vegetables, just as long as they were served WITH meat and potatoes. The phrase is still in use because there are a lot of men that still prefer meat and potatoes as the main dish. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
