Does wearing a hat too much cause people to lose their hair?

There are so many myths and confused ideas about what cause male patterned baldness. The fact is that the loss of hair in young males is usually a matter of genetics. That said there is some evidence that how you wear a hat can contribute to baldness.

If the hat is worn so tight as to cut off circulation to the hair follicles it could contribute to the creation of sebum. Sebum is a waxy substance that is secreted by the sebaceous glands in your skin onto hair follicles. Sebum can react with cholesterol to create a hardened sebum plug that cuts off oxygen circulation to the hair follicles and cause it to fall out.

This is especially true in warm and humid climates. Remember humans lose hair daily. This is due to the natural growth cycle of the hair.

Baldness occurs when the hair is not replaced or new hair does not grow. Men who wear hats might notice hair loss more since they will see the normal lost hair in their hats. This is normal and no reason to panic.
