The trombone has a unique set of notes called the pedal tones. They sound an octave lower than the normal low register of the instrument. They are the 'fundamental pitches' from which all the overtones are derived.
Other instruments like the baritone and even the trumpet have these as well, but the unique structure of the trombone makes them much more accessible to the player so they can be used reliably. There are seven pedal tones - one for each slide position - and they produce a thunderous bass similar to the tuba.
