I got a phone call today from someone I did not know asking me for a phone number or address of a cousin. I did not feel comfortable giving out the information so I said I didn't know. I really don't know where she lives or her phone number, but I do know where she works.
She works at a local restaurant. I just didn't feel right sending someone I don't know to her place of employment. Now I'm feeling a little weird, what if she would have liked to talk to this person?
I'm not sure I did the right thing. Any thoughts or advice? Asked by T2laughingfeather 46 months ago Similar questions: asked give personal information relative Consumer Electronics > Cell Phones & Accessories.

Information I definitely think you did the right thing! I would never give out any kind of contact info on the phone to someone that I didn't know! In this day and age you can almost never be too careful about things like this.
For instance, how did this person get YOUR number to be able to call you and ask about your cousin? If this should ever happen again, you might ask the person for a way for your cousin (or whoever) to contact them. Ask for their phone number, and if you should happen to see your cousin you will be sure to pass it on.
That way, it's not giving anything away on your part but you will have the contact info if your cousin should actually want to contact this person. If they are a person who is looking for your cousin for legitimate reasons, they will understand that you can't give out that kind of info. It's always better to give out too little info and be safe rather than sorry in this kind of situation!
You did great! .
I think I would have done differently! First, certainly I would have not shared my cousin's information with that stranger. This is obviously invasion of somebody's privacy which is not right.
Second, the best solution would have been to ask for the person's contact information and tell him that you would tell your cousin that somebody with name X and phone number "whatever" called you and the rest of story! Third, I would have probably pretended that I am not sure if I can find my cousin's contact information and when I can contact him. Since maybe my cousin does not want the other person know that he is actually "escaping" from him!

It is simple really You did the right thing by not giving out any info on your cousin. The person could be a serial killer for all you know. You should have though gotten this person's information and given it to your cousin.
Tell the person that you do not give out such information to strangers, but you would be happy to supply your cousin with his/her info. And if she is interested in contacting you, she will.
Even if they did answer you; I would have just said that I'll take a message and give it to her when I can. Then again, it's her life and you're not responsible so there truly isn't a right or wrong thing to do. If your gut is uneasy, then you did what was best for you and that is what matters.
If she was expecting a call; she should have contacted you before that person did.
You shouldn't feel weird If that ever happens again, ask for the person's name and their information and take it to your cousin and let them make the decision to call them back or not. Sources: my thoughts .
