Yes, yes, yes...and we're already doing some 'pickin' Of course, we're in NW Florida so we get a 'jump start' on the gardening season.. Even through the cold snap we still had fresh leaf lettuce for salads...the first strawberries are ripening, snow peas are young and tender...radishes, carrots, scalions...yellow & green beans. The blackberries and seedless grape vines are flowering... Fresh mint, parsley, oregano...all the herbs and spices are ready for pickin... I can't wait for the first tomatoes...there is NOTHING in the world like a tomato from the garden.

1 I got the lawn mowed, and the overgrowth of brush cut back at the edges. That's about as good as it gets, for me.

2 Gardens are very difficult in this part of Arizona because we have so many wild critters that eat everything we plant - thousands of bunnies, coyotes, javalina, and a massive number of birds, etc. In fact there are only a few landscaping plants that they will leave alone. This year I decided to plant one tomato plant and see if I could protect it long enough to "harvest a crop". I planted it in a large pot on top of a high stand.

Then I tied Mylar strips on the tomato cage to discourage birds. Then I placed a cage of chicken wire around it and a special bird protective cloth over it. Yesterday I picked my first ripe, red tomato!

I can't wait to eat it, but for now I'm keeping it on the window sill in the kitchen where I can smell and admire it.

3 Easter we had an unusually warm weekend and many people rushed the gun and planted. Since then we have had a couple of frosts and Mothers Day was cold and barely hit 50 degrees. It pays to wait until you know we are really into Spring.

Pattiann, my problem is squirrels since I have a lot of oak trees in my neighborhood. I can't stand those rats! They dig up everything, not the mention the acorns they bury and they forget where they buried them.

Ugh! .

4 We got all of our tomatoes, peppers, cucs, and zucs in the veggie bed. Herb garden is started but still needs quite a bit. We put in 4 trees and I just picked up some new Lilacs and Hydrangeas to put in.

Next I start the arduous yet joyful journey of creating all new flower beds around the property. It's the benefit of moving. You get to create a different palate from scratch.
