It seems like you have done your research well, and there really isn't anything anyone can tell you that you don't already know. I do feel the need to tell you though, that if you fail SF for whatever reason, they will most likely put you in an infantry unit. Also, if you do decide to go National Guard (in any MOS), you can switch to Active Army Special Forces (you get a shot at it anyways).
It is one of the few jobs open to prior service, as of a month ago, and Guard units will traditionally release their Soldiers to go to Active Duty.
Let the relationship play out. If its going down hill join active. If its going normal or uphill go national guard.
Also have you considered Reserve? Being reserve is short time active duty :).
I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
