Not an easy solution. There is only one way to get that smell of smoke out of a room permanently but this depends on how much work you want to get involved with. Also, If you are still living with the smoker the smell will just come back.

I have heard of people that have purchased a house or moved into an apartment that was previously owned by a smoker. If the place had carpeting it had to be ripped out since smoke odor gets all in the carpeting. You could shampoo it but many times you will still smell it.

Most times you would have to wash down the walls that can even be yellow from the nicotine. Many people feel it is just easier to repaint. Curtains absorbed the smell and upholstered furniture can as well.It is a big task to do it correctly and I do not know if I would bother with all that if the smoker still lived with me.

The smoker should be banished to the outdoors whenever they intend to light up.

First you want to clean with water as many things as you can (walls, floor, carpet etc. ) then after you deodorize everything pick a smell you love to live with. I love cinnamon so I have bought everything that has that smell and use only that (carpet powder, candles, oil burners, room sprays, inncense) I even buy the cinnamon pine cones after xmas on sale for musty closets and my car. Also you can boil on the stove just about anything that has a natural smell (lemon, orange peel apples w/cinnamon, pine, clove, vanilla beans).

After you boil it for a 1/2 hour take the water off the stove and put the pot on a trivet or a pot holder or something that the heat will not damage and close the door to that room for at least 6-8 hours and the steam will dissapate most of the stench that is there. This is a good trick for old houses that have that old musty smell. This is a must for hardwood floors to use hot water when cleaning since the wood will expand and take in some of the water.

You have to faithfully use deodorizers to get the smell out. There are so many places that can hold smells that you would never even guess.Cat spray is the worst on the outside of your house and vinegar or garlic will stop the male cat from coming around. I also buy the gel deodorizers and put one in every room and two for the bathroom and kitchen since they hold smells more from the water vapors.

Also air our you place as much as possible, chemical smells can build up from new carpet, paint and plastics along with electronics. All of these are not good to breath in with out some fresh air. This is the perfect time of year to do some spring cleaning and only have the smells you love when you come home.

It will make a difference in your attitude. You will be inspired and have more energy. If ever you cook fish only BBQ it outside it can reak for weeks in your house.

Baking soda I saw a "Fight Back" with David Horowitz some decades ago where this was tested against cigar smoke (even worse! ) and that successfully. Be liberal with the stuff..

1 repaint the room, wash the curtains, try shampooing the chairs and couch with one of those Bissell Green machines. If there is wall to wall, have it professionally cleaned or replace it all together. Others will have some good ideas too.

I think 's almost impossible to remove the stench by cleaning only one room. Deep clean or replace the upholstered furniture and carpets. Seal the walls and ceiling with Kilz and then paint with a paint specially mixed to cover cigarette odors.

Wash the hard wood furniture and other hard surfaces with warm water until all the brown tar from the cigarettes is completely removed. Have the AC ducts cleaned. Open all doors and windows for several days to air out the house.

Even after doing all of the above you may still be able to detect the cigarette smell but, in time, it will subside. After my mother died I had to get rid of the stench caused by 15 years of chain smoking, so I know what I'm talking about. Good luck with the project.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
