This is on any food label, but I have more information. The FDA requires any food label to state that the macronutrients have: Carbohydrates, whether it's sugar, complex, sugar alcohols or fiber, all have 4 calories per gram. What they don't tell you: Fiber will never be used as energy, because we humans can't digest it.
Fiber is a non-net-impact carbohydrate, so it has no influence on blood glucose. The same holds true for sugar alcohols, though they do actually have a caloric value and can be used as energy (calories are a measure of energy, in simple terms). Proteins all have 4 calories per gram, though the quality (complete protein, biological value etc.) is never stated on food packaging.
Fats and lipids are a little more sketchy: Fats will be broken down by type on the food labels; saturated, polyunsaturated, trans fat and monounsaturated. All of these fats, barring trans fats, are necessary, but saturated should be consumed in lower amounts than mono and polys. So, after all of that, fats are digested into triglycerides. Medium chain triglycerides(MCTs) actually have a greater caloric value than long chain triglycerides(LCTs).
Most fats have 9 calories per gram, but MCTs have 10.In simple terms: Fat= 9 calories per gram carbs= 4 calories per gram proteins=4 calories per gram For weight reduction, monounsaturated fats should be favored over the others and complex carbs (longer the polysaccharide chain, the better) over simple sugars. Calories........... One gram of protein has about four calories, one gram of fat has about nine calories, and one gram of carbohydrate has about four calories. The USDA suggests that you get about 30 percent of your calories from fat. For a 2,000 calorie per day diet, that would equal 600 calories from fat.
Since fat has nine calories per gram, that would be equal to about 67 grams of fat. You should watch your cholesterol and saturated fat intake as well. The USDA suggests no more than 300 mg cholesterol each day, less than 10 percent of your daily calories from saturated fat and less than one percent from trans fats.
Hope this helps....have a great day.
I learned this in health class... 9 calories in a gram of fat. 4 each in protein and carbs.
