How many hotels have you stayed in this year? What do you like about hotel rooms? What do you dislike?

I'm sitting in a hotel room tonight and I can't even count the number of different hotel rooms I've stayed in this year between vacation travel, my work travel, and joining my husband on his work travel. I do like the pillows at this Doubletree hotel. They are pretty comfy.

We've slowed down our travels, but.... This year a couple of hotels and one time as a guest in some people's home. Hotel advantages: you can kick back, order food up, and not have to talk shop or maintain any conversation. You usually get more sleep than staying at someone's house.

You can leave the bathroom messy. Sometimes there are good mattresses; sometimes not. Hotel disadvantages: you don't know the last time the bedspread was cleaned, or how well.

Same with the carpet, blankets and pillows. In sealed rooms the air never smells fresh and if you are not in a sealed room, but have a window you can open, nine times out of ten there is a lot of noise from something outside! Staying with strangers when we are invited speakers is always an interesting experience, and I have to admit that we are learning to prefer hotels.

A host family may want to talk for hours about my husband's work, or mine, and dinner is a hope and a prayer that it will be something we like (and we are not fussy eaters! ). The last home we stayed in did not have a shower or tub available in our half-bath and we had to share with the host family.

That can be hard when you are on a tight schedule. Sometimes there are good mattresses; sometimes not. A hotel room, especially a nice one, is a place of peace and quiet to retreat to, and we appreciate that a lot.

But all in all, we prefer home.

Not like home..... My husband travels all the time for work. Sometimes I go with him. He stays mostly at Holiday Inn.

The beds are actually quite comfortable. They also leave a soft pillow and a harder one for each person. They have a feather bed type of blanket.

The bed is very comfortable and pretty to look at. We have stayed in mostly suites. This way you have a living room with a tv as the bedroom has one also.

There is a refrigerator and a microwave in the room also. We have stayed in other hotels but I have found that the Holiday Inn is the nicest. I am going to have to count on my fingers January San Diego Hampton Inn Marriott March Orlando Radisson Charleston Holiday Inn May Nashville Hampton Inn June Rio de Janeiro Hotel Ritz Plaza-Leblon Burlington Sheraton August Budapest Ramada Copenhagen Kong Arthur Sonderborg Sandbjerg Manor Copenhgen Copenhagen only the last two were memorable and stand out as particularly nice. The Sheraton and Marriot were typical conference hotels, the location was good, everything else overpriced... and I HATE places that charge for wi-fi! The Budapest Ramada was nice though small... I like the Astoria better and will stay there next time we return but this neighborhood was very nice with fun little restaurants and a lovely little park less than a block away.

The Kong Arthur was the real keeper. I found a nice "carbon neutral" special (dang... I left my certificate in the room! Oh well, maybe they will recycle it!) and the room was spacious (by any standard, not European capital standard) with a flat screen tv, broadband, and a whirlpool tub!

Very nice breakfast too and LOTS of coffee... the Danes understand coffee.... The place at Sandbjerg was fun as we were in the actual manor house... very large rooms with a great view. Not en suite but as there only three couples in that part of the building and four bathrooms to share that wasn’t bad at all.No tv or real maid service but we had all our conference buddies to talk with and it was fun to watch the math guys slowly learn to bus tables so we didn’t miss that too much. Awfully good food too... and what a beautiful site for a meeting!

Overall, I dislike the feeling that I am "perching", staying somewhere for a week or so and not having enough hangers or drawer space for my "stuff". Wondering if the (limited) jewelry I brought is safe in the room (ditto the computer and cameras) when there isn't a room safe. I also find them to be noisy... you can hear the showers running in the morning or street noise (esp in European hotels).

On the other hand, I love seeing new places and I am usually so tired from running about that I sleep really well! If I don't like their pillows (or my husband really needs mine to be comfy) I always have my little travel pillow (I use it on the plane) and that does me well. Sure needed it in Japan with those buckwheat pillows they have... those are just impossible for me to sleep on!

Not every year involves this much travel (for which I am grateful) but it was fun though tiring. Not done yet as there is Kalamazoo in October and Oaxaca likely in December! The Surf Inn, Montery California is my enemy! I have stayed in many hotels, just this year about 8. Really I'm pretty easy going on the choice of chain/location.

After all the point of travel is NOT to spend as much time as possible in the room usually ;) . The Surf Inn is were my husband and I ended up staying after the hotel we were planning to stay in told us the were over booked. This place was like somewhere movie cops would be keeping a witness away from the mob: dirty room, old everything, creaky toilet >: ( .

I do like La Quinta Inn or any place that caters to business travelers. They often have alot of nice amenities like laundry rooms and 24 hour pools/ fitness rooms. Also they are not TOO expensive.

I dislike the quality of hotel/motel that I feel we can afford. I bemoan that the quality of towels that you find in hotels has steadily degraded over the past twenty years. Pet peeve: People who talk & walk loudly in the hallways during normal sleeping hours!7:30 a.m.Is too early to be awoken, when on vacation!

Doors were too dang thin! Next time I'll pay more! I stayed in one motel this year, with my wife, in a city that we drove to, for our anniversary.

It was inexpensive, but it was important for us to just get out of town. And the city is very beautiful. I like that they are there, and available, and one can usually find one on the internet on short notice.

Sometime after we've paid down the credit cards a bit I'd like to splurge on a really nice one, and book it far enough in advance that we get the best view! Sources: Layyla, see my question to you in the Discussion!.

French Quarter only. I stayed at the Hotel Monteleon. Any other good ones?

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
