My lawn was mowed recently with a dull blade. As a result, my lawn went from green to quite yellow. I put some Scotts Turf Builder fertilizer on it 3 days ago.
I've since bought a bag of Scotts summertime fertilizer. How often can I fertilize my lawn? In other words, can a lawn be "over fertilized" and are there negative effects?

It depends on the type of grass, your weather conditions, and other factors Usually you can just fertilize once at the start of each season and be done with it. So around March and September is usually fine. That's all I do, but I live in a very warm climate. In cooler climates, you might want to follow this advice:How often to fertilize?
It depends on how good a lawn you want. For northern lawns, one feeding in spring and another in fall is minimum. An attractive, thick, green lawn can be kept throughout the year with an Annual Program of four or five feedings, starting in early spring and repeated every two months, provided the right kind of fertilizer is used. ashomecenter.com/ferterlizing.htmAdding a little extra can make the grass grow faster, but too much fertilizer will end up burning your lawn because the chemicals in fertilizer are caustic.
I once burned a few patches of my lawn by adding a little too much fertilizer. Fortunately, they were just small spots and took care of themselves after a few weeks with good watering. The best thing to do is to know what kind of grass you have, buy fertilizer specifically for that kind of grass, and follow the instructions on the bag.
If you don't know what kind of grass you have, ask a couple of your neighbors and someone is sure to be able to tell you. Good luck! Sources: My experience .
Too much fert - not a good thing! To answer your question, yes you can over fertilize. There are two common outcomes to over fertilization.
The first is that you can burn your lawn which most people are aware of. The second that most folks don't realize is that it can cause the over production of new grass. This overproduction will not allow the soil to absorb the decomposed dead grass.
Most of your common ferts will have directions as to the application amount using your drop spreader. If you have St. Augustine grass as I do you are familiar with "dolans". These are the runners that you normally see when the grass is spreading into an area with no grass.
The dolans also create a thatch network as the base of the grass. When you over fertilize, and you have the overproduction of grass blades, the large amounts of cut grass will not be able to penetrate the thatch of dolans. I dealt with this last summer.
I applied too much fert, and I did not use a bag on the mower. After about 4 months there was so much compaction of the dead grass that I started to strangle out the new blades that were trying to pop up. I recommend a "16-4-8" fert that has a slow release nitrogen.
You will have to look on the bag. Also, depending on where you live you should fert no more than 3 to 4 times a year. I live in South Fla and I do it 3 times a year.
Jan - May - Oct. If you live north of here, than start later in the year - about March, then May, Oct. I hope this helps.

Twice a year is perfect if you choose a slow-release or organic lawn food. Fertilize in September and in mid May. Over fertilized lawns may be dark green, but this a sign of weaker growth that is more prone to disease.
If you prefer to fertilize just once a year, feed in the fall. Sources: yardcare.com/region/region6_tips.html .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
