How to auto re-connect Netgear wireless G router with comcast broadband cable modem?

How to auto re-connect Netgear wireless G router with comcast broadband cable modem I have a Netgear Wireless router connected to Comcast Broadband cable modem (wired connection to wireless router) My Comcast broadband router gets rebooted every night at mid-night and this drops the internet connection from wireless router to comcast cable modem. The wireless does not reconnect automatically, I have to turn off and the wireless and turn it back on to be able to get the connection through wireless. I had to buy a wirless on/off power switch so I don't have to climb upstairs to reset the wireless router.

Any suggessions, how I can have it in ALWAYS CONNECTED mode. I could not find any related setting in router configuration. Asked by mt007 48 months ago Similar questions: auto re connect Netgear wireless router comcast broadband cable modem Computers > Software Development.

Sounds like the Netgear's DHCP is not well implemented. My first concern is why your Comcast router is rebooting at midnight every night. I have never heard of that happening.

When network providers do that, it usually means they've got a router or switch configuration problem, and rather than doing the sort of troubleshooting it would take to find it, they're simply rebooting daily before it has a chance to develop again. If other solutions don't help, this is something you may wish to take up with a higher tier of support (escalated support. ) My second concern is why a simple router reboot is causing your Netgear router to lose its connection to the modem.

When your Netgear router first powers up, it should use DHCP to obtain an IP address. That address is good for a given period of time. Under normal conditions, if you lose your network connection and then regain it, your Netgear router should see this and attempt to renew its IP address.

Either you'll get a renewed lease on your old IP address or you'll get a fresh lease on a new one. It sounds as though this is not happening because when the Comcast router reboots, your modem is still providing an ethernet connection, even though it's a dead one. The first thing to do here is look to see if there's new firmware for your Netgear router that might solve this problem.

I would have looked for you, but you didn't tell me which model of router you have. Another thing to check is whether or not you can enable a "keep-alive" function in your router's setup that will detect a loss of internet connectivity and renew your lease automatically. With most routers, if you go into the web-based setup and manually renew the DHCP lease, you won't have to power the router down and back up to fix this in the short term..

Either a Java/VB script to reboot your router; or a timer; see details: The problem is probably that when Comcast resets your cable modem at Midnight,Comcast then assigns your cable modem a different IP address, default router, etc. By DHCP. Your NetGear wireless router still sees a cable modem there, and it gets "confused" by the unexpected changes. Unfortunately, there is not an easy way to "unconfuse" your NetGearwithout rebooting or resetting it.

If your are familiar with writing Java or VisualBasic scripting,it is possible to write script which connects to your NetGear wireless routereither through the Administrative web page or the command prompt, and have your script re-boot your NetGear wireless router. You could set it up as a scheduled task (after Midnight) orwrite another script which monitors your internet connection andtriggers it when you loose connectivity for longer than so many minutes. A more practical solution would be to put your NetGear wireless router on anelectronic timer which after Midnight powers it off for a few minutes and then back on again.

Or similarly to above have a program which monitors internet connectivity, and if you loose connectivity for more than a few minutes, power off the router & back on again through the use of an X10 switch & X10 computer interface. $40 X10 timer:http://www.amazon.com/X10-LCD-Mini-Timer-Event/dp/B000KBMA52/$50 X10 computer interface:http://www.amazon.com/X10-CM11A-ActiveHome-Automation-Interface/dp/B0006I3BDE/X10 components & modules (you would need an "appliance module":http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/104-4325501-0970334?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=x10&x=13&y=18For more information or assistance, contact me LeheckaG on AskVille. 1 I have a Netgear Wireless G router and I have a similar problem. I narrowed the problem down to the DHCP lease. I also had to turn off and turn on the router to regain my connection. My router renews its DHCP lease for 3 days and 12 hours and after that time is up, it doesn't renew automatically.

Now, I figured out that by going into the router configuration with my browser, I can manually renew the lease and the router will be good again for 3 days and 12 hours. I have tried for a firmware update, but it says none is available. If you are interested, I can tell you how to renew the lease manually.

2 ScottyJGA, regarding your answer "Sounds like the Netgear's DHCP is not well implemented. ":If you go to Netgear's website you might be able to find the latest firmware for your router, and download/update manually. The router Admin Console does not find it automatically.

I downloaded it from the netgear website and upgraded the router. Plus I had to disable the TrendMicro built in antivirus from Admin Console because it was causing the connection drops almost every day. I have been running the wireless router for last 4-5 days without any connection drops.
