Plasma At that size LCD screens are very expensive and for the price you are looking for Plasma would be your best bet unless you are willing to drop in size to say 46". I have to say it depends on where this TV will be if you have lots of light I would recommend LCD if it is in a dark room then Plasma is the way to go. At 50" I would recommend a Plasma from Panasonic.

If you're sure you want 50", you'll have to go with Plasma I would not buy a DLP or other projection TV under any circumstances. I think they look terrible, so LCD flat panel and Plasma are the only options. The problem is that the largest LCD you're going to find for under $3,000 is going to be 46".
In about a week, I'm going to be buying a 46" LCD from Sony that does full 1080p resolution. You won't get 1080p from a Plasma for under $3,000 either. If you can live with 1366 x 768 resolution and definitely want a 50" TV, I'd recommend this Plasma:Toshiba 50HP66 50" Plasma HDTVI've done tons of research and I really think it's the best on the market.
Price right now is $1899.99, so you're getting a top notch set at a real bargain. It can accept 1080i inputs, but will scale it down. If you really want 1080p and can live with a slightly smaller set, this is the one I'm going to get and the one I recommend:Sony KDL-46V2500 46" Bravia V-Series 1080p LCD HDTVIt's out of stock at Amazon right now and is expected in another week or two.
From all my research, it's the best LCD on the market today. Current price is around $2,700. I've read many people say that 1080p isn't really worth the extra price, but others say it is.
I think the psychological factor of knowing it can handle 1080p will be significant, however. And the main reason I'm not that fond of Plasmas is because of the possibility of burn-in. So I think I'll be happier with and LCD.
Also keep in mind, if you plan to be doing much viewing in a brightly lit room, LCD is a much better option. I hope this helps! Sources: My Opinion .
