How to Connect a Laptop Computer To Your Television Screen How to Connect a Laptop Computer To Your Television ScreenQuestion: Sesh wants to watch YouTube videos and Flickr photos on his large TV screen with the entire family and is wondering if there’s any simple way of connecting TV to the PC. Solution: While is is possible to display the contents of your computer screen on the TV, you may not be very happy with the overall picture quality and the text is not very readable. If that is no concern, here’s how to connect your computer to a Television set (we used an HP Tablet Vista computer and a Sony Bravia HDTV for this example)1.

First you need a video cable for making the physically connection. Most computers have an S-Video port that can be connected to the S-Video input of your TV screen using a very cheap S-Video cable (it’s round with 4 or 7 pins). For better picture quality, you should connect the computer to the TV using standard VGA ports or via the DVI to HDMI cable provided your TV supports these ports.2.

Open the "display settings" in your Vista computer and activate output to the TV screen. You can either mirror content of your computer on the TV or extend the display just like a dual monitor screen.3. Pick up your TV remote and switch to "External Inputs" from the menu.

You will need to change the default "Video 1" to a different selection which may be "HDMI 1" or "Video 2" depending on how you have made the connection. Important: Make sure you connect the cable to the TV before turning on the computer as sometimes it may fail to recognize external display. You may also need to change the screen resolution of your TV using the Display settings in your Control Panel else the picture may appear distorted.

Has someone successfully sent a test email to you while this disconnection was occurring?3) Please go to the start button, click on "Run," and type "cmd" in the resulting box, hit OK. Next, type "ipconfig" at the prompt in the black window and press enter. Can you tell me what you see for "IP Address?" (e.g. 192.168.0.3 or something to that effect)4) In the same black window, if you type "ping google.com" and press enter, do you see "Request Timed Out", "Ping request could not find host google.com", or something similar to "Reply from 72.14.207.99: bytes=32 time=47ms TTL=246"?

If you received the test email, you saw an IP address that doesn't start with 169 in step 3, or you saw a reply from google.com in step 4, you're definitely connected to the Internet as you suspected and the problem lies elsewhere. If you're not connected yet, let us know and we'll go from there. If you're definitely connected, then next go to Start->Control Panel->Internet Options.

Click on the "connections" tab and verify that "never dial a connection" is selected. Also click on the "Lan Settings" button at the bottom of the "connections" tab. If the "proxy server" box is checked, uncheck it.

Try connecting using Internet Explorer again. If that doesn't work... Use your computer with a good connection to download Windows Defender, a free spyware removal tool from Microsoft. (Unless you're on Vista, in which case it's included) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=enTo be on the safe side, also download fresh spyware definitions:http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=70633Load both files onto a USB thumb drive and launch them on the computer you can't connect with.

Once you've updated the definitions (the second file), run Windows Defender from the start menu and run a scan. If something screwed up your browser connections, this should hopefully kill the spyware and restore it. Man, that was a long post.

I hope this gets you started...

Kug123 replied to post #2: 3 Many thanks for your great, detailed response. That computer is running on Windows XP. It connects to the Internet via Charter Cable wireless connection using Netgear USB WG111V2 Wireless USB Adapter as there was apparently a problem with the built in device.

I have just reverified that that computer can receive email--no problem there. The IP Address is 192.168.0.11. When I did the "ping google.com" it did indeed connect with times, etc. When I tried to click on the "Internet Options" icon on the Control Panel, it will not open.

Is this then the problem? Many, many thanks for all of your help. Hope to hear from you soon.

I have not downloaded the Windows Defender as yet.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
