I have dialup internet access and I want to get a laptop PC, and a wireless modem. How can I make that work? I will not have a desktop PC so I won't have it set up as a network.It seems so simple, but I'm a little confused about the details.

Wireless dialup modems Actually, a better solution for you would be to purchase an external serial dialup modem (US Robotics makes good ones), a regular computer router which has a serial port for "dialup failback" (intended if a broadband connection is lost, but you won't need to worry about that), and some kind of wireless card for your laptop (assuming it doesn't have integral wireless). Essentially you'd network the laptop with the router but you wouldn't have the second computer to network to (you wouldn't need it as the router with modem connected would act like the second computer). This is a better option since you'd be able to use the router in the chance that you upgrade to broadband later on, and especially if you decide to buy a second computer later on (and want to network them) Sources: my knowledge .

Here's a couple suggestions I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but there are a couple of devices out there that sound like they may do what you want. One is a bluetooth 56k modem. You just plug it into your phone jack, and the modem can then be accessed by any computer with bluetooth.

That will let you go wireless on your 56k connection. Product link. Another option would be with the Apple Airport Extreme base station.It is a wifi router that includes a built-in 56k dialup modem.

That would allow you to share a dialup connection with any wifi enabled computer you might have. Wireless modem I think it is quite plug and play. Connect the base unit to the phone jack and the extension unit to you laptop modem. You probably won´t need to change your computer configuration.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
