I have red, black and white electrical wires from my ceiling,but only black and white wires from the fixture?

That might mean that in the process of disconnecting the fixture you accidentally caused a short circuit and tripped the circuit breaker. Until you get power into the wiring; it is pretty hard to determine which wire is which. This is a situation that generally takes me about 15 minutes with a continuity tester and a tone generator to riddle out.
