Replacing a light - have black and white wire from ceiling - have one cord from fixture with three uncolored wires?

Some fixtures have what is commonly known as "zip cord" which is molded insulation over two wires; in which case one side will have one or more ridges molded in the insulation - this corresponds with white in the color code. Some bi-pin lamp fixtures don't require even this much coding; as there is no polarity issue. Your third wire is most likely a ground wire; which is supposed to either be bare; or marked with green.

Usually, the ground wire is also obviously connected to the metal of the fixture, itself. If this doesn't match up, I'd personally be nervous about making the connections without confirming with a continuity tester which wire is what.

These three wires are individually covered in a clear coating and then all three are coated in a clear covering. That SHOULD be okay - as the light probably wouldn't work if you had the grounding conductor connected to the black - and the white tracer would be the neutral as you have it connected.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
