It's not a good sign, for sure. It isn't a good sign, especially if you find that you need a drink in order to stop your hands shaking. It would be worth looking at the series of questions offered by AA to determine whether you're truly an alcoholic, but it's obviously troubling you.

It's also worth asking whether this behaviour runs in the family, because there's a strong genetic component. However - there is hope. My dearest man has just come out of a programme of rehabilitation after twelve years of drinking too much; one of the things he told me was that he needed the first bottle to stop his hands shaking, and then the second bottle (this is wine, but two a day) for whatever other purposes it fulfilled.

He's so much better it's amazing; it also put a stop to some other physical miseries he was suffering from; and the aim of his psychiatrist is to enable him to have a glass of wine at mealtimes, but no more. Take good care of yourself. The good thing is that you become much more fun to be with (alone or in company) and you've quite obviously got that potential.

It might, but there's more Since you said in a previous question that you were taking Zoloft, you should know that alcohol and Zoloft do not mix well - Zoloft intensifies the effects of the alcohol. Again, this is something that you should discuss with your doctor or psychologist. Alcoholism is certainly a possibility, of course, and it's not something to take lightly.

One interesting thing is that some (perhaps many) alcoholics actually drink as a form of self-medication. Particularly people with undiagnosed issues such as depression and bipolar disorder; alcoholism is common in families with a tendency towards those conditions. Which is another good reason to have a long, serious talk with your doctors.

Yes it does A person who drinks one drink a day is an alcholic if they have to have that one drink a day. Now whether that causes them a great deal of discomfort is another thing, but think of it this way. If you get the shakes after just 12 hours without a drink, what do you think would happen to you if you were say in an accident, put in the hospital for several days and unable to drink?

I would bet it would escalate from the shakes to more. The shakes by the way are called delirium tremors and can be fatal. They are symptoms of alcohol withdrawl.

I hope you seek help for this problem as it is serous. Take it from one who knows, I am an ex-substance abuse counselor.

Its an indication that things are not normal and that there is a possiblity that you might have an alcohol problem.
