There's a splendid book of basic patterns for all civilised shapes, if you knit a good deal: Ann Budd has two very good books - both Basic Shapes for a range of sizes from child to cuddlesome and a range of tensions. Very well-produced in spiral binding that lies flat, allows you to mark the exact details of the project you're making, and since I bought it I've hardly used anything else. So if you're a regular knitter, that's what I'd recommend and look no further.

Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Knitting Without Tears is a wonderful book for any knitter, and has some good instructions for saddle shoulders and various sweater shaping, as well as a variety of other projects. (Her other books are worth looking at also... I found I had to get them all. ) My other book recommendation is one of my very favorite knitting books of all time.

I like to use it as a reference when knitting, but it’s also great for reading with a cup of tea... just dreaming about future projects and making plans. It’s Knitting in the Old Way... and I’ve included a link to it below. Not only can you use this book to create saddle shoulder cardigans... but you can use the various components, styles, patterns and methodologies to knit any sort of sweater you can imagine.

This book is illustrated with line drawings rather than photographs, but don’t let that put you off. It is well organized and well executed. I cherish my copy... I think you would be very satisfied if you decided to get it.
