Right now how much non-perishable foods do you have in your kitchen as in days to eat and not going grocery shopping?

I had just cleaned my pantry out when you asked this question! ...and found 12 cans of tuna! I'd been thinking to myself, "I need to go to Costco and get some tuna.

I seem to be out. " I also found about 799 packages (well, maybe not quite that many) of assorted pasta. I'm a sucker for those 'Buy 10 for $10' sales.

The problem is that my stupid pantry is 3 feet deep and somewhat narrow with no roll-out shelves. I would love to have a voodoo doll of the man (yes, man) who my designed my kitchen. Anyhow, I have: 4 5-gallon barrels of spring water 2 cases of 13-oz.

Bottled water 8 cans of soup (assorted flavors) 12 cans of tuna 20 packages of pasta (approx) in assorted shapes 7 cans of beans (black, pinto, garbanzo, cannelini) 2 cans of pineapple 2 packages of brown basmati rice 1 bag of jasmine rice 2 cans of turkey chili 5 packets of instant oatmeal 3 boxes of vanilla soymilk 5 cans of assorted tomato products (diced, sauce, pureed) 1 jar marinara sauce 1 jar peanut butter 2 jars salsa (chipotle and green) 2 boxes of dry cereal 1 flat can of anchovies 1 jar of kalamata olives 1 jar of roasted red peppers 1 jar of wasabi mayo (good ol' Trader Joes! ) bags of flour (wheat, white, corn, oat) sugar (raw, white, brown, powdered) 3 cake mixes 4 boxes of jello box of microwave popcorn 1 can of yellow corn 2 boxes of chicken broth condiments, spices, seasonings, and extracts galore I'm sure there's even more. PLUS there's the cat's food.

I splurged and bought him a few cans of the Sheba deluxe stuff. Looks pretty good. We'd be set for...maybe Armadeggon - or at least a couple of months.

We'd miss our fresh produce and dairy, though. Two weeks Worth of non-perishable food I would say that I have at LEAST two weeks of non-perishable food on hand. I have a pantry in my kitchen, which is very small, but contains canned goods such as soups, beans, pastas. I have a bookcase in my garage that I use for storing "bulk" shopping like papertowels and garbage bags, but I also use that for canned items.

I cannot resist a sale, so if I see something that I know we will eat and it is on sale, I buy it even if I don't need it at the time. Every other month I have a "Let's eat out of the freezer" week. We do not go grocery shopping that week and can only make a dinner out of stuff that is in the freezer, though it can be supplemented with other food on hand.

I like to do this because it forced us to eat what we have purchased. I am not a big believer in throwing away food. My mom used to buy stuff and freeze it only to throw it away because it got too old.

I don't want to waste food like that. I could probably live off of food in my house for a month or two. But the problem is the food is stuff that I don't particularly like. I have cereals that I don't care for, Nutri-system food (could live off of that like army rations for weeks).

Canned veggies that I don't like...pastas that I haven't felt like making, sauces in jars, rice, beans, popcorn. The list goes on and on. I also have lots of leftovers in the fridge that I just don't want to eat anymore. My name is prettyface, and I waste food.

I'm so ashamed! .

Some items like sugar, flower and corn meal are always present in my kitchen and those would last for weeks. Because we live in a rural area and have a vegetable garden we also can and freeze a lot of food so I dare say that we could easily go for a couple of months without going grocery shopping. We have lots of cans of homemade vegetable soup along with beans, pickles, jelly and frozen corn.

We also have cans and cans of tomato paste and tomato juice so while we might have to eat a fairly repetitive diet we could make it for quite a while. Since some recipes call for powdered milk I also have some of that along with several packages of various kinds of noodles. It depends where you live - Big house, small apt - Disaster prone city When I lived in an apartment in San Francisco we had little room for spare food, but I always made a point to keep several days of non-perishable food on hand in case of earthquake. These were foods that could be eaten without any cooking or heating. Now that I'm in a large house in a different city it is much easier to stockpile food and I could easily live for nearly a month on what I have on hand (if water and cooking is available)..

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
