Should there be an Askville Orientation for new Askvillers?

So they can learn how to vote. I mean I always give 5 start for answer that are on topic. The only time I vote lower is if the answer is total bull.

A lot of new askvillers that join think that they should vote low because it will improve there standing but it's just true. What do you think? Asked by almerica 48 months ago Similar questions: Askville Orientation Askvillers Amazon > Askville.

Good idea I think there should at least be a larger FAQ for new Askvillers...not only about voting on responses, but the best way to get more points for new users. People will get frustrated early when they see the points accumulating slowly and see that the top point earners are in the thousands for a week.

I think an Askville orientation would be an excellent idea. Maybe they could produce a nice video. I vote very much like you do but I realize that other people are a little tougher and that’s okay too but giving everybody else a low rating to improve your own standing is just coin gaming plain and simple.

On top of teaching newbies the finer points of voting the video could also deal with making sure that newbies who ask questions know that they need to vote. The new appeals process has helped with that problem but it is annoying to have to go through an appeal when you shouldn’t have to. I have noticed that a lot of new people have to ask a question about how Askville works and hope that somebody takes the time to answer them and that isn’t really fair to the new people at all.

When I first came here things were simpler and it still took me a while to get the hang of it and now there is much more that has to be grasped before one can really start to enjoy Askville. Your idea is an excellent one and I hope that the Askville team takes it under advisement. Sources: my opinion .

Well, there are FAQs and terms of use that folks really should read. I suspect most don't initially, and only may do so later if they have a question. But as to what you say about opinion questions, I agree with you.

I do not rate someone low if I do not agree with their opinion. I can judge the quality of some recommendation or info given, but any opinion is valid--such as a question I asked awhile ago about desert island albums; everyone got a GREAT--how could it not be great? It's not my list, it is theirs!

I give relatively high scores for any response. The only time I fail to give a good score is if someone does not answer the question at all or simply does a cut and paste. Now, I do appreciate someone looking something up for me and giving me a link in a cut and paste; they have taken some time to help.

I do not give BAD ratings for that, but certainly a well thought out, personal response will gain the highest rating possible. I think if you get low ratings on an opinion question you might just appeal it as a matter of course. It makes sense to me to do that..

Askville Orientation Something like a short video might be helpful for newbies, if it was VERY short, and covered the basics like how to ask a question, that you need to vote, and explain the ratings, appeals, basic rules/behavior guidelines. Maybe. But I disagree with telling them exactly HOW to vote--after all, your rating system is how you feel voting should be, and others differ in their interpretation of the responsibility.

I never give auto 5 stars just because an answer is on topic. That is very generous of you, but I like to reward those who put more into their answer, and lessen the reward for those who just "answer", without any special efforts. Yes, sometimes it happens that some vote others low to get a better rating themself, but that's not true in every situation--we have a lot of honest and fair people who are here.

Now that Askville has instituted the appeals process that should help to rectify any problems in the ratings, if those involved use it. Askville can be a big confusing place, I am sure, as there are so many aspects to it. So yes, I think an orientation might be helpful. It would have to be short, and not mandatory, or we will lose people because of it.

The FAQ is helpful, but it's also confusing as some important info is in the FAQ and much more is buried all through out the blog--so you have to read it all to make sure you find out what everything means.

In the beginning, the newbies have to find their way and see what the voting is about. I have gotten low scores from some of them, but it usually balances out. Some people come to askville for just one specific question and may never come back.So I chalk that up to advice or product seekers.

Most of the regulars are fair. As for a orientation, it would be hard to mandate scores. It does sound like a no-brainer on opinion questions though. It's not appropriate to give someone a low score, because his opinion differs from yours.

This was an opinion question, right!? .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
