Good metaphor. Let's take it a step further. Since alcoholics consume more liquor, it makes sense that they should pay more in taxes (though taxes on goods are flat, not progressive, but let's not let knowledge and logic ruin a perfectly good example, shall we?).

Since the poor consume more social services, by your example, it makes sense for the poor to pay more in taxes.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
