One person is not a good sample and we're all different. I used to have quite a few stationed near me (I remember some jogging down the road chanting in the way I'd only ever seen and heard before in movies) though all those bases have closed and have been taken over by housing developments. There certainly aren't as many American troops in the UK as there used to be, thanks to the end of the Cold War.
Personally, I live and let live and I'm practical. If it's a helpful thing for us, then fine by me and all I ask is some mutual respect. The cultures of our two countries are very different, even though we speak the same language.
I also remember that we have troops in Germany, especially as my father served there when we still had compulsory military service. He never did learn any German! Other people will be biased for no rational reason.
Perhaps there are ancestral memories of huge numbers of American troops stationed in the UK in WWII. That really was a culture clash - the joke was that they were "overpaid, over-sexed and over here!" It didn't help that the UK was subject to food and clothes rationing because of the difficulty of getting supplies due to U-boat activity, and the Americans had all kinds of things we didn't.
(Rationing resulted in some extremely imaginative cooking and, oddly enough, a healthier country. It happened to apply to all "unhealthy" foods but not to vegetables, and parks all over the country were dug up to grow more "veg". My mother, who was a little girl at the time, remembers candy bars (as you would call them) served up as a treat one small slice at a time.) Some people are just anti-American for one reason or another and I can understand some of those reasons I will say this: we Brits used to rule a quarter of the world and we've got used to the fact that some people don't run their country the same way we do, and good for them if it works.
We get the impression that the USA thinks it has the best system and thinks the rest of the world should have it too, imposed by force if necessary. The Islamic world really hates that. Oh well... that's just a few ideas as to what's going on.
Meanwhile, welcome to Britain and I hope you meet some less prejudiced people.
I can't understand why American troops would be stationed in the U.K., unless it is the last stage of the American take over started by Hollywood films, American style shopping malls, Junk food and an English Conservative Party infected with the crazy philosophy of the American Republican Party.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
