What advantages, if any, does a DVD recorder have over a VHS tape recorder?

I was thinking of buying a DVD recorder to replace by VHS recorder. However, I'm not sure if there is any advantage to the DVD recorder, unless it records at a higher quality. Does the DVD recorder have disadvantages?
