What organizations are out there to help the destitute with home improvement?

One of my best friends is looking to do some home improvement projects this spring. She and her fiance had planned to remodel the attic to increase the space in their house. However, in the process of tearing out the walls and ceiling in the attic, she found that the roof had leaked--badly!

It has rotted some of the boards under the roofing materials and has put them in a pickle--as in, they've not got enough money to repair the roof (even if they don't remodel). I've heard that Habitat for Humanity will do it, but we're unsure if they will do it in her area. She lives just outside of the corporation limit, so even though her mailing address is South Point, she cannot get help from the South Point CAO (Community Action Organization).

Does anyone know of some good organizations that will help put a new roof on and maybe help do some other things? Here are some ideas: The best idea is to first get a second job--both of them if they can. It is amazing how much money is generated from a second job. If one wants it, one can get it.

Life isn't free. Avoid credit to pay for this. Each local Habitat for Humanity organization is different.

Here is the web site for Ohio that shows the grants available through that organization. Call them and ask for help. Our local one is very helpful, and also very clear about what they can and cannot do.

habitatforhumanityofohio.org/grants.html They also operate resale facilities that may have reduced prices on shingles and other building materials. State and local governments also have programs that may help. Habitat should be able to direct you.

Local churches and faith-based organizations are another source for help. Don't be embarrassed to ask. I know a number here in Houston, but I don't know about Ohio.

Call folks and ask: the county government, state government, big churches, Jewish Community Services, etc.

Rebuilding Together is a well know org that does this work Rebuilding Together (used to be Christmas in April) is the largest org. But there are many local service organizations that will help folks in that situation. Church groups are well known for that kind of charitable work in their local areas.

Habitat for Humanity will help build new dwellings but they do not do repair work. Sources: have vol for Xmas in April .

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
