An Antique Perfume Bottle When my husband and I first started dating we were both very young. He was barely scraping up enough money to pay the rent, put gas in his car and buy food to eat. Our first Christmas together (we’d been dating about 3 months) he went to an antique shop and bought me a beautiful antique perfume bottle.
He couldn’t afford it, but when he saw it, he said he knew that I had to have it. It was the first gift he ever bought me and I still have it on a shelf with the other perfume bottles that I collect. That perfume bottle was the first of my collection and the main reason I started collecting.
He’s bought me jewelry, cars, furniture and gadgets in the years we’ve been together since, but that perfume bottle means the most because he bought it for me even though he couldn’t afford it and still said that he wished he could’ve bought something better for me because I deserved much more. I think his exact words (or close to it, since it has been almost 14 years) were, "I know it’s old and it’s not much, but when I saw it I had to get it for you. As soon as I can I’ll get you something nicer and newer."

The best gift my wife ever gave me cost about five bucks. When our grandson was about two she made a copy of his little handprint on the Xerox machine. Then she wrote this wonderful tribute to “Paw” as seen through his eyes.
She bought one of those double 8X10 frames (the five bucks) and put the handprints on one side and the tribute on the other and I cried like a baby when I read it. Heck, I’m tearing up right now just thinking about it. Several things... After we were married, my husband and I lived in a duplex that he and his folks co-owned in California. Our wedding was in June, and it was very warm by then. Being an Oregonian and having lived in a mild weather location, I had never fully experienced a California summer.
The duplex had no air conditioner, but I assured my husband, "Nooo problem! We have fans, I'll open up the windows and doors in the early morning, close them when it starts getting warm, and close the blinds to keep the sun's heat out! " I now understand the pitying expression on my husband's face as he listened politely to my plan.
S first day back to work, I faithfully did everything I told him I'd do. Ask me if it worked. He came home to find me sprawled naked on our bed, bright red and sweaty, gasping for breath, and the fan going at a high rate of speed less than three feet away, aimed directly at me.
He purchased a lovely air conditioner for me that very day. Ah, what bliss... In that same duplex, I discovered that the floors were fairly dirty. My husband's dad had left there a huge, ungainly piece of equipment he called a "shop vac".
Using that big thing in that tiny apartment taxed my patience and my strength. My husband thought it amusing to watch me wrestle it around; I suppose I did look kinda funny, and my muttering about "crummy, gutless, oversized machines" evoked a furtive chuckle more than once, though I don't think he ever dared actually laugh out loud. Guess what I got for Christmas?
A Hoover, wahoo! Most wives would have suffered a bad case of "nose-out-of-joint", but most wives hadn't spent over five months doing battle with an SUV-sized non-helpful Artoo-Detoo. Okay, now for the romantics out there who may think I got the short end of the stick...one year for Valentine's Day, a local jeweler got in a limited batch of "gold roses": real roses in full bloom dipped in 14K gold.My wonderful man ran down there as soon as he could, and not only got me a lovely glowing rose, also purchased one for my mother and his mother.

The Christmas Pony When I was growing up I always wanted a pony or horse. Like many girls, I had the dream of waking up on Christmas morning to find that special gift under the tree, if not out on the lawn. I grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles, so it wasn’t a realistic dream, but that’s not the purpose of dreams.
I always liked riding horses whenever possible and never lost that dream of my youth. It was the morning of Christmas Eve and my husband and I took a walk to the cafe at the nearby airport for breakfast. We did this on many weekends.
Along the way we would pass a local stable. The trail over the hill to the airport went behind the stalls of several horses. Each time we passed I would pause to pet the horses and talk about how much I loved them.
On that special morning we stopped at the stall of one of the horses. My husband asked if I would like to go around to see the horse better. This wasn’t a usual comment he would make."Come on, let’s get going!
" would have been more like it. But I wasn’t going to pass up such a chance. When we got inside the stable yard and approached the stall, my husband asked, "How would you like to have a horse like this?
" She was a beautiful bay quarter horse mare. Of course I would like to have a horse like her. But his answer was the shocker.
"Good, she’s yours. " So here I was, a 33 year old woman finally having my childhood dream come true. I am not sure if finally getting a horse of my own or the thoughtful gift from my new husband (who knew absolutely nothing about horses) was the best present.
I know that I will cherish both of those presents for all of my life. -- Margy Sources: personal experience drmargy's Recommendations Misty of Chincoteague Amazon List Price: $5.99 Used from: $0.01 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5 (based on 69 reviews) Of course I had to rename by horse Misty after my favorite childhood book about horses..
Because it 1) helps me stay in shape; and 2) provides me with activities to do with him and with the kids; and 3) has provided me with a great deal of personal satisfaction. In short, I had a bike as a kid, and rode a good deal, then really didn’t use one from the time I was about 21 until my spouse bought me this one--well over 20 years. But we’ve been riding, and I am as proud as I can be to say that at 48 years old, not having ridden regularly, I can and have, ridden my bike on railtrails for 29 mile, 35 mile and 42 mile trips, and we average about 10 miles per hour, and that we’ve done 15 to 20 mile trips on local roads (Lancaster PA river hills country), still averaging that 10 miles per hour.
I may get passed like I'm standing still by some hotshot kid, but I’m still proud of what he's helped me to accomplish. Part and parcel of my appreciation of this gift is an ex who is MASSIVELY overweight and sedentary, with genetically and lifestyle-based heart problems. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this spouse’s commitment to our mutual continued good health--and this bike is a physical manifestation of that commitment.
