I went vegetarian at 15 - 24 years ago this summer. When I made the conscious decision late that summer, it was pointed out to me that I hadn't eaten meat for months prior to that, so I suppose it just happened naturally for me. It did change my life, but not in a significant spiritual way, I'm afraid.

I'd always felt that way, but never knew that I could act on it. I suppose that it was empowering in that way, and that I finally felt "right". Like I said, natural.

How it most changed my life was breaking the pattern of health problems that have always plagued my family. I am the ONLY adult member of my family to never suffer from hypertension or high cholesterol. Unlike a large number of my relatives, I am not overweight and have not developed diabetes.

Unlike many relatives on my mother's side, I show no signs of heart disease, which killed my grandfather at 50 and my mother at 40. My doctors credit my diet with reducing my risks for these conditions. It's also changed my view of food.

I have developed such a huge love for food! What we ate when I was growing up was frankly quite gross; nothing fresh, nothing green, always fried or breaded or dripping with sauce. When I look in the frig now, I see fresh foods that I can't wait to eat, and we eat a lot.

My daughter has the same view of food, thank goodness, and likes nothing more than fresh, in-season produce.

I became a vegetarian initially for health. I was having a lot of back pain and headaches. Then about a couple of months into becoming a vegetarian, I received a pamphlet from a lady.

The pamphlet had a lot of information about the way animals are treated in the slaughterhouses. This was how I became an ethical vegetarian. I really like this diet, because I know I'm not contributing to animal suffering and vegetarian products taste really good.

For Thanksgiving, you could get the Tofurky dinner roast. It's vegan. Campbell's Mushroom gravy is vegan, too(be careful not to confuse it with Heinz Mushroom gravy).

The Quorn dinner roast and the Worthington Dinner roasts are vegetarian, not vegan. I also have experienced the same thing with family and friends. They all want to eat pork shoulder and turkey for the holidays, but I would much rather have a Worthington Dinner roast with Pepperidge Farm cornbread stuffing.

So I tend to not go to those kind of gatherings either.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
