Why should I avoid alcohol and drugs if I have a bipolar disorder?

Alcohol or substance abuse complicates diagnosis and treatment, and therefore should be addressed if you or anyone around you thinks you may have a problem in this area. Because alcohol and drugs influence mood, anyone who has bipolar disorder should avoid using any illicit drugs and minimize or eliminate alcohol use. If you've already been diagnosed and are on medications for bipolar disorder, you'll find that most, if not all, of your medications caution against using alcohol while taking these medications because of the possibility of dangerous interactions and interference with their effectiveness.
