How do I get rid of a strange smell in wall to wall carpet in a basement?

Ugh! It sounds like it got wet and mold is growing on the back of the rug causing the smell. You might have to tear up the rug since mold can be dangerous to breathe.

You might pull up a corner of the rug to see what's going on under there. If you have the typical cement floor, moisture continuously comes up through the porous cement. So you don't want to put rugs directly on a basement floor.

The moisture is going to collect on the underside of the rug. So you should look under there. If you don't want to remove the rug, you can try Lysol to try to kill the mold.

You can try shampooing it. It might be a lost cause, however. Let us know what you find.

Thank you-I had it steamed once but am thinking of having it cleaned again with a heavy deodorizer-I hadn't thought of mold so thanks for that-I will check with my son to see if the rug got wet. Only thing that will help is an ozone generator to shock the room (and everything in it)-this thing will destroy all odors in your space. These are commercial grade pieces of equipment (they are used in top hotel chains) but if you really need to get odors out then these are the things to use. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
