How do sleep problems affect irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)?

Most patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional syndromes report poor sleep. IBS and sleep disturbance are a vicious cycle. The bad stress response of allostatic load leads to abdominal pain and bowel disturbance, alterations of the mind/brain, emotional distress, increased vigilance and symptoms of anxiety and depression.

The disturbance of sleep increases gut and bodily sensitivity, which increases symptoms and distress. Scientific studies have shown that the symptoms of IBS and fibromyalgia can be produced in otherwise healthy adults by sleep deprivation. Poor and inadequate sleep contribute to allostatic load.
