How do you wash your towels so they smell clean and fresh, esp if they smell horriable! Some of my towels smell horriable, either from being used as a bath matt and then sitting in the laundry chute for a day or two, or from things like puppy pee getting on a towel that is on the floor, or from wiping up food with a kitchen towel, etc. I use lots of liquid detergent currently, most of the towels have some color to them, so I normally do not use normal bleach on them. I have used oxy clean in the past, with fairly decent results, but it get soo expensive, it is 10-15 times as expensive as regular bleach and does not work nearly as well.

Almost any bad smell can be removed by using vinegar as a rinse. If laundry soap isn't enough to get rid of a bad or rancid smell I suggest using a vinegar rinse. Vinegar is highly acidic but won't harm the color of your towels.
Rinse them in vinegar and wash them as you regularly would. I would put about a half of a cup of vinegar to my regular rinse water. -layyla-'s Recommendations How Clean Is Your House?

If you don't mind some fading, I'd use Chlorox Or, you could experiment with different wash loads...trying a cup of white vinegar one time...if that doesn't sweeten them up...maybe a cup of amonia next wash. I haven't been too pleased with the 'bleach for colors'...so I've started buying only white towels...then I can bleach the heck out of them and kill all bacteria. I've had great luck using regular Tide liquid, a 1/2 cup of bleach, cold water in my white load...letting it soak for about a hour...running the full wash cycle, adding Downey liquid fabric softener to the rinse.
Machine dry on 'medium heat'. I haven't noticed any abnormal wear or problem with elastic...and I've been doing this for years. One of the big things I do is use vinegar in my washing machine to help get the smell out. All you need to use is about a cap or two to make a difference. If it's really bad you could use more, but you don't want to use too much or all you will smell when you get them out is vinegar.
I've used this to get the smell of cat urine out, and it's next to impossible to get out. You could also try some color safe bleach, but the bleach really does make a difference.
Try bleach First try to add a bit of white vinegar to the towel wash - and no fabric softener. If that doesn't eliminate the smell, in the next wash, add a small bit of chlorine bleach. I did that recently with navy blue towels - they didn't fade at all, but it got rid of the mildewy smell.
Good luck! .
Here's some things to try... Extra wash cycles, a long soak, and a good detergent. Here's what I'd do... Wash cycle--add towels, detergent, water temp for colorfastness (white towels, hot), and let the load soak overnight, or at least for several hours. Before I started the rinse cycle, I'd pull out one and check it.It it still smelled bad, I'd run the water out, and re-start the cycle--and depending on the smell--either use this cycle as an extra wash--adding more soap--or as a second rinse cycle.
On the final rinse cycle, I'd add the vinegar or baking soda to the rinse water--half a cup or so of white vinegar, or a tablespoon of baking soda. Borax is also good--I used to use it when I was washing diapers, so cleaning up puppy-peed towels should be a natural.. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
