I would like to also suggest some necessary specifications for your new system selection: Core 2 Duo processor. Might add some to the price, but will enable you to use your laptop longer and take advantage of programs comming out next year and beyond. RAM - 1GB Minimum, 2GB or more if possible.

More RAM is the most cost effective way to help your laptop run faster. Hard Drive - Minimum of 250GB - allows for plenty of music, picture and software/backup space. Video Card - If you have the money, get a video card with at least 256MB ram, to allow you to use Vista AERO functions if you want, and help take strain off the CPU when photo editing and intense graphic applications.

Screen - Ultra bright/widescreen if possible - allows you to view movies and use Windows Sidebar in Vista. I suggest a few extra dollars for something your happy with, that will not hurt your pocketbook. If you cut in some critical areas, you'll not be happy with your final choice and wish you had put a few dollars out.

I also suggest you can still go with Windows XP and don't need Vista just yet. Depends If you know what you are looking for in terms of screen size, memory, hard disk, etc. Go to the online discount places like Tiger Direct, NewEgg or Tech for Less. You'll find some really good deals there but you'll have to wade through a lot of dreck to find them. If you are less sure of the technical stuff, go to the major's websites (Gateway.

Com, HP. Com, Lenovo.Com etc) and pick out a base model and customize it to your requirements. Do not get suckered into buying a ton of accessories and software.

Buy that stuff separately as you need it.DO NOT got to places like Best Buy (except to look and feel). You'll end up grossly overpaying to get something that's not really what you want. Tip: Avoid Windows Vista like the plague.It's a pig and a resource hog and you need twice as much hardware to get a machine that runs half as well.

There are still lots of Windows XP machines around and most all the majors will let you order one on line. Buying a good XP machine will cost less for hardware and avoid all the compatibility hassles with your older software/hardware.In the past year I've purchased a Lenovo laptop from Tech for Less and a Gateway laptop from Tiger Direct. Good prices, fast service and the machines work fine (and ain't got no steenking Vista).

It depends on what you want to use it for In order to determine the best laptop you need to answer a few questions. What do you want to use it for? Surfing the Internet, checking your email, writing papers with Word?

Are you using any processor intensive applications like Photoshop? Do you want to do serious gaming? If you chose the latter an inexpensive laptop won’t meet your needs!

If you chose the first option most laptops should meet your needs. Make sure that you get a minimum of 1GB of ram especially if you are getting Microsoft Vista. I would also suggest that you get an OS disc even if costs extra.

This will allow you to reload the operating system if it becomes corrupted without having to install all the junk prevalent on new PC’s. Any of the brands out there should give you basic performance to meet your needs. You will then have to choose by physical size and options.

Consider getting a Mac Book. It is a good buy for what you get and you can even load Windows on it if you have too. If you compare feature for feature they are good values!
