If you could buy one wide angle Nikon lens, which one would you get? A Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 or a Nikon 24mm f/1.8?

I am getting bonus this year - yeah! There is a new fast Nikon 24mm f/1.8 that is coming out in late March 2010. Now available is a Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 which everyone raves about.

I have a Nikon D70s now but I would eventually like to get a FX - full frame D700 or a Nikon D700s whenever that arrives. I understand that investing in great lens is more important than digital cameras since they keep getting better and better all the time. It is a very difficult question..... I spent good 10 minutes just thinking if I should respond or not, nonetheless I will try to give my point of view. I have been a Nikon user since I bought the F801s in Tokyo in 1991. Later progressed to D70s which I lost during burglary at home, infact they took all my gear and left nothing for me.

I have yet to replace my gear, (sadly none of it was insured) Anyway, coming back to your question, the thing that I was concerned most about was the cost of ownership of the 24mm f1.8 as it has not been released yet so guess work may not work out. However if I were to choose between the two, even though it is hard to decide I would be slightly inclined towards the 14-24mm. The reason being that it does give you the fexibility in terms of reach and is only 1 stop slow compared to the fixed focal lenght one.

The fixed focal length lens would in opinion be a bit sharper in comparision since it will be a much simpler lens compare to the variable focal length. Again, the other thing going in its favour is that it is 1 stop faster lens and that can come in very handy in low light conditions or those late evening shots outdoors in fading light. The newer body that you anticipate getting would be under 20 MP or more like 14-18MP in the price bracket.

For that resolution the 14-24 would still be a very good lens. Only if and when you go beyond 24MP than the things change a little in terms of resolution and if that was the case I may opt for the fixed lens knowing that it would have an edge on the variable focal length one. Anyway, I have put forward my 0.02 cents, the final decision is yours and yours alone.

I would buy the 14-24 and here is why... Your camera uses a Nikon DX sensor which has a crop factor of 1.5x, this means a 100mm lens on a full frame body will become a 150mm lens on your D70s. This is usually nice for telephoto lens but it is a pain for wide angle lens. Considering that, a 24mm lens will behave as a 36mm lens on your D70s.

This is on the edge of what is typically considered as wide-angle. The 14-24mm will behave as a 21-36mm on your D70s body. That will be wide angle.

You have the convenience of a zoom lens. On the other way, you will have "just" f/2.8 instead of f/1.8 from the "prime" 24mm. I would prefer to have a wider angle, and a zoom lens, than to have 1 1/3 extra f/stops.

Remember that on a wide angle lens, the depth of field will be bigger and the popular blurred backgrounds are almost impossible to achieve, even with f/1.8. So unless you really need that extra light, you should go for the zoom lens. As soon as you have a full frame body, the 14mm lens will be really wide angle which may be nice to have too. I hope I was able to help.

Just so that I know, please send me a compliment in case I was helpful Thanks! Sources: Personal experience as a serious amateur photographer .

I didn't check out the weights of the lenses that you're interested in but I'm guessing that the 24mm f1.8 lens *might* be lighter than the zoom lens. You have to take your needs into consideration. Do you want a prime lens (which are typically higher quality.

Larger aperture) or do you need a zoom lens (heavier, more versatile, but generally not as high image quality)? If you want to see big, check out the Canon 50mm f1.2 lens. I tried that one out. It's massive, about $1,200, and the brokeh and image quality is unparalleled.

But in the end, you'll wind up walking around with a Sony Cybershot or something like that because your uber camera & lens is giving you a backache.

Check out the weight of the lens before you buy. Even if the lens is free, if over time that you find that you're reluctant to carry around a camera with a massive anchor then that the lens isn't right for you. I've been staying away from the giant lenses since they're a drag to carry around outside of the studio.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
