My bathroom sink smells when the water runs out. If the vent area has something in it , how do I clean it? If I cover the vent with my finger, there is no smell.

You did not say if your sink is running slow to drain or not If it is running fast and does not need cleaning out, then you have a load of bacteria someplace. It is the bacteria which are causing the smell. Get some of the Lysol or other cleaners which have bleach in them, or use straight bleach in a spray bottle if you like.

Spray into the vent until you know that you have coated everything. Pour a decent amount (at least a quarter of a cup) down the drain. Do NOT run water.

Let it sit for an hour and then rinse out. This will kill the bacteria if all else is OK. BUT, if your sink is running slow, it may need to be snaked out.

You can do this yourself with a snake you can pick up at a hardware store or you can hire a plumber to do it and check out the trap. It depends on how 'involved' you want to get! At any rate, the smell is from bacteria which have found some kind of refuse to burrow into and multiply and cause this unpleasant stink..
