I drive a '97 Ford Escort. No tilt wheel. It only makes the noise for a second when turning the steering wheel, and it does it in both directions. I plan on having it looked at but I just don't have the money right now.
Anyone know if this is a serious problem? It's had the noise for a while and it drives fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

I think I know exactly what that is. If it could also be described as a groan, and it occurs while you are actually turning the steering wheel at lower speeds (like turning into a parking space) and makes a very similar noise when you hold the steering wheel turned all the way to the left or right, then the noise is coming from your power steering system. Do not be alarmed.
You should check your power steering fluid level. If you use a professional oil change service, they do this when they change your oil, and there should be no problem pulling in and asking them to double check it. (I use Oil Can Henry's, and they also top it off free of charge, if you are a regular customer) Sometimes the noise is an indicator of a low power steering fluid level, but I have found that Fords tend to have a lot more power steering noise than other makes of car.
If the fluid level is fine, (note if you check it yourself, that there are two lines on the dipstick - one shows where the fluid should be before you start your car, and one shows after the car has been running and the system is warmed up) then that particular noise level is normal for your car. If it changes, or if the feel of the steering changes, then you may have cause for concern. Sources: 6 years in a service station .
If you have power steering you should check your fluid level if the fluid level has gone down it will make a whinning noise when turning in either direction... Sounds to me like the power steering fluid is low.. This problem may not be as bad as you thought. Hope this helps... I used to own an escort so I have been there and done that... If... If it's a creeeeeeaaaaaakkkk, then you probably need new struts. About $300 to $500 a pair. If it's a squeal, then it's just a loose or worn belt, maybe $100 tops.
Don't let them go on a fishing expedition.... they can probably find all kinds of other things "just about to go". Brakes, ball joints, cv joints, wheel bearings, calipers, etc....

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
