My VW golf 1 makes this screeching noise when I turn the steering wheel but it does not have power steering.whats wrong?

I would think a good mechanic could locate the source either sitting on the ground or on a lift. The pitch of the sound is a big clue, as would whether the golf was moving or sitting.
If the noise is happening when you begin moving, it could be a CV joint. This will tend to be louder at lower speeds, and least of all when coasting or in neutral. It could also be a wheel bearing--the sound should change with speed somewhat.
These are both serious problems that can cause more damage and you should get the car into a shop unless you've got the gear and knowhow to do it yourself. If the noise is there whether the car is moving or not, and you have power steering/power assist, it could be the steering system. This will also tend to cause more noise in the beginning and when the car is moving slowly.
Check fluid levels and the belt, and the pump. This could become a big problem fast, so check this out quickly--the belt and fluid you should be able to do yourself, even if you're not into working on your car.
I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
