Becoming Justice Blackman and any book on Theodore Roosevelt Justice Blackmun was, and still is, one of the biggest enigma’s of Supreme Court history. He came from a working class neighborhood and suffered from being pulled in various directions throughout his professional life. Specifically the pull from Chief Justice Warren Burger, who incidently grew up with Justice Blackmun in that same working class neighborhood.

Why this book is interesting and shows adversity though is that it follows Blackmuns "papers" throughout his life. He wrote in a Diary almost constantly and his personal writings show how the person who was nominated by Nixon to be another conservative on the Court slowly but surely changed into being considered one of the most stable-voting liberals on the Court. Specifically, the struggle with Blackman’s authoring of the decision in Roe v.

Wade, is very interesting, and this book is one of the best to show you that while Supreme Court Justices are not without their partisanship, they are always thinking and arguing with themselves about how law and power should be handled. After reading the question over again I think I may have missed the mark, however it is still a good read. While nothing comes to mind specifically speaking to illness as books and biographies go, I would see if I could find something on Theodore Roosevelt who was a very very sick child, and eventually went on to become President of the United States.
