Born Maewyn Succat circa AD 387, he was a Welshman who was captured by pirates when he was sixteen and sold into slavery in Ireland, where he worked for six years as a herdsman. A few years after he returned home, he saw a vision of an Irishman named "Victoricus," begging him to return to Ireland to spread the word of God.
