Who's your favorite author? Favorite book by the author? Why?

My favorite author is J.R.R. Tolkien. I first read The Hobbit when I was about 13, and read the Trilogy in the next few years. I tried reading the Silmarillion then, but it was really over my head. It's my favorite now, because it's all the backstory (and frontstory, too), even though it is written in an exalted chronicling style.

Actually, I like the even though they are just a collection of his notes and the commentary by his son, Christopher. Overall, he's my favorite author because he created an entire world, weaving together the roots of lesser-known myths of Europe, inventing languages and writing systems, and doing it all with such a sense of wonder, beauty, and the reality of the depths of pain and evil as well as magic. There is a lot of wisdom in the books, and characters both common and larger than life.

Tolkien set out to create an epic mythology for England, and he did.

This depends heavily on the genre you are discussing. I worked in a bookstore for many years which resulted in gaining a large number of "favorite" authors... here are a few: Robin Cook - best book "Chromosome 6" - These are medical thrillers that really make you stop and think about what could be in the medical world. Michael Crichton - best book "Andromeda Strain" - As the author of amazing novels that have been turned into movies (Jurassic park, Sphere, Congo, etc) and TV shows such as ER, Michael Crichton is just an amazing man.

David Sedaris - best book "Me Talk Pretty One Day" - one of the funniest authors you will ever read and extremely informative as well. Mark Leyner - best book "Why do Men Have Nipples" - if you need a book that will make you laugh and actually give you bits of knowledge this is the book to find. Gary Paulsen - best book "Hatchet" (or any of the Hatchet/Brian series) - one of my favorite books as a kid, I still go back and read them every so often.

I could go on and on here (haven't even come close to going into non-fiction yet).

My favorite author is Kurt Vonnegut, and my favorite book by Vonnegut is Cat's Cradle.

C. S. Lewis _The Screwtape Letters_ It's a wonderful satire.

The letters give advice from a senior demon to his nephew, who needs all the help he can get in his business of stealing souls. The actual advice, of course, is to you the reader.

Viktor Frankl is one of my favorite authors. "Man's Search for Meaning" is one of the most powerful books I have ever read. Frankl was a psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor.

He is considered the father of logotherapy, a type of existentialist analysis. Man's Search for Meaning tells the story of Holocaust imprisonment from the perspective of a therapist. The stages we go through as we adapt to change are explained within this historical perspective.

I learn about myself and the behaviors of others by reading this book. That is why it is one of my favorites.

Thomas Pynchon is my favorite author. And my favorite book of all time, is titled "Gravity's Rainbow", and is a stunning literary tour de force. Set obliquely against the backdrop of World War II, and in particular the German V-2 rocket program, it combines surreal psychological narrative and quixotic adventuring with equal dexterity.

Pynchon is a master of allusion and embedded reference, and the narrative density is tremendous, but it reads so fluidly that you never feel stymied. The masterpiece of American writing, and easily the best novel published in the 2nd half of the 20th century.

Anthony Bourdain "Kitchen Confidential" He is funny, intellectual and gives you so much knowledge on the operations of a kitchen you will never want to become a chef. S TV show is just as good.

I have so many favorite authors that it is hard to choose. My favorite literary author is Salinger, and his best book was "Nine Stories". My favorite author of the moment is Terry Goodkind.

You must start with "Wizard's First Rule.

Favorite author has to be Fyodor Dostoevsky. Favorite book by him, "Crime and Punishment," hands down. I'd love to get through this more than once, but it's so incredibly dense, that's it a little difficult.

I keep having to go back and re-reading. However, I did get through it a long time ago and will always keep it at the top of my list. It's an amazing Russian crime drama full of social and internal emotional struggles.

If you have a few weeks to kill. Pick this one up. It's an amazing read.

My favorite author is Shakespear. He is so gifted, though he lives so long before us. S work can cross through time and space.

I value his Sonnets a lot,foe example,Sonnet60. I love the sentence:'Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore,so do our minutes hasten to their end. '..Very meaningful.

The favorite book of mine by Shakespear is Hamlet. It is totally a comedy, but it is so deep and sharp. Somethings in life is actually inevitable.

How to face up to them. Everytime I have such feelings,I remember Hamlet,an immoral character which deepens our thought,..everyone of us should has his/her own value, just like Hamlet does. We should stick to our value and never give up.Do not hesitate and try be brave .

Vince Flynn writes political thrillers that you CAN'T put down! They are the most addicting books you will ever read. Go buy "Transfer of Power" today!

.

One of my favorite authors is Maya Angelou. While all of her written works touch my heart...my favorite is her very first, "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings".

I like Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, J. R. R.

Tolkien, Mary Stewart, and Nora Roberts, but my favorite author is Jayne Ann Krentz and my favorite book is Lady's Choice. Integrity, honesty, family and commitment are hallmarks of her writing.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Great book - horrible movie! This book just really pulled me in and kept me wanting more. It's a great love story!

I love books. One of my favorite authors is Alice Walker, who is most famous for /The Color Purple. / My favorite of hers, the one I most want to pick up and reread, is /The Temple of My Familiar/.

Another is Barbara Kingsolver, and while I love her fiction my favorite book of hers right now is /Animal, Vegetable, Miracle/. When it comes to kid's book, CS Lewis's /Chronicles of Narnia/ will always have a special place in my heart. However, today, my favorite author is JRR Tolkien and my favorite book is /The Return of the King/.

Unbelievably, I just finished his trilogy at age 22. I love it. This book features my favorite ending to a book ever. It's just so complete.

All time, Henry Miller. I loved all his books, but will favorite Tropic of Capricorn. In recent times, Neal Stephenson, Cryptonomicon + the Baroque series.

Those were just pure pleasure to read. I didn't want them to end, and for a long time, they didn't. But Miller was just the master. As Lawrence Durrell said, the master in any age.

Miller was more than just a writer, he was a guru. S books are psychoactive. They change the cells of the reader.

They rewrite your DNA! Live absolutely! That's the way to "enlightenment.

My favorite author is Phyllis A. Whitney and I like her "Secrets of the Samurai Sword. " Her novels are easy to read and easy to understand.

Sometimes I also feel that I am on the scene.

It is sidney sheldon and I love all his books................ but fav of them all being morning noon and night.

I don't know, my current favorites are Tad Williams and Anne McCaffrey. Anne McCaffrey: any of the Pern novels Tad Williams: The War of the Flowers, the Shadowmarch trilogy, and the Otherland series.

Wow! Nobody has mentioned Paul Auster yet? Shame on y'all!

:-D I don't want to sound vain but here I go, vain shall I be. I studied a bunch of literary theory at school and have read more than 1000 books in my life, maybe around 1500 already (I'm 29 and don't really count them). If that doesn't make you picky with who you think is your favorite author, what does?

My prediction is that he, Paul Auster, will win the Nobel Prize, because he's younger than Philip Roth (you read it here first), who's my other US choice. For my other predictions, read this answer: mahalo.com/answers/books-and-authors/who... For Paul Auster material, walk to the nearest bookstore or library and grab "Moon Palace". P.S.Don't thank me.

Thank Paul Auster.

My favorite author is Lois Duncan. My favorite book by her is Stranger With My Face. It's my favorite book because it completely relates to my life in every way. It's like she wrote the story about my life.

I have read every book she's ever written and she is just a beautiful writer and has a magnificent talent. She's been my favorite author since the first book I read by her which was Summer of Fear. She has many books out, and they are simply amazing.

:) She's also the famous author of I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Favorite author:JK Rowlings. Favorite book: Harry Porter. I cant achieved that level of imagination.

I salute her.

I like Joshua Fuld. I recently stumbled upon Brandon Sparks and the The web site needs some work, though.

Joyce Carol Oates I love the dark reality of her writing. My favorite JCO book is entitled "You Must Remember This. " She is also incredibly gifted at writing short stories.

Vince Flynn - Mr. Flynn takes great pride in researching his fictional stories to make them become truly realistic and engrossing. Even his picture on the jacket looks like the mega-star hero he creates in his books, Mitch Rapp. "Transfer of Power" is the second book in a series about a 007-like character/hero who plays by his own rules.

He's the guy all of us want to know. "Transfer of Power" was the first of the Mitch Rapp series that I read and definitely not my last...Fast paced and engrossing from the very first second...If you love the tv series 24, give Flynn's books a try...you too will be hooked! Mitch Rapp is a likable character that you will root for the entire time...he spends all his time saving the country...In Transfer of Power, it is Mitch who needs to save the White House from being taken over by terrorists...his mission is to free the hostages and save the president, all without getting caught...this book is a thriller from the first page to the last...If you read this, I promise it won't be your last Flynn book!

Dick Francis and I liked "To The He writes mainly about horse racing, primarily in Britain. All his books are easy reads and the characters are likable. The stories are very suspenseful and full of twists and make you want to keep reading.

I think I've read almost all his works and enjoyed all but one!

One of my favorites is Tom Robbins and of his books, one that I have read at least three times is called "Jitterbug Perfume". Robbins is very amusing, very original and manages to throw a lot of ethical and philosophical questions into some of the silliest situations and setups ever imagined. You may have heard of "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" (forget the awful movie that was made).

It was funny, romantic, brought in a lot of social issues and all that about a woman whose thumb was so huge she could make anything stop on a roadside by waving it. If that isn't talent (Robbins I mean) I don't know what is.

J.K. Rowling is my favorite author. I give her highest marks for bringing something to the medium that few other authors can: young readers, lots and lots of young readers. If you can teach a child to appreciate literature over movies and video games, then you've opened up their world to all of the other great writers that have come before her.J.K. Rowling has made reading accessible and fun.

She paints worlds with her words. I guarantee a child can finish and want to read more of her books before they even want to tackle Dostoevsky, Shakespere, and the likes.

Roald Dahl -- he has so many good books, but my favorite was "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More" (a book of 7 short stories, all of them fantastic). He wrote books for kids and young adults that are extremely exciting and fun to read, and that anyone under 80 years old would still find enjoyment reading. Some of the more famous books he wrote - Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, and Matilda.

I also liked "the Twits" a lot :).

Although, contrite, I can't say enough about JK Rowling. There are few books that I can read yearly, but the Harry Potter series is amazing. I adore the first book.

My favorite author is Fernando Pessoa, a Portuguese writer & poet He was a very lonely man, even when surrounded by his friends, and - even born in the 1880s - he now epitomizes the spirit of the modern man, surrounded by techonology but ultimately alone and vulnerable. My favorite book by him is called "Book of Disquiet". It is a wonderful, incoherent book made of quotes, thoughts, essays, and so many different but always compelling texts that make you think, reflect about your own life and the life of those around you.

I love it because it is the kind of book you can always come back to and find something new for many many years. I strongly recommend it.

Michael Crichton because as a little boy he was able to get this video game obsessed kid to crack open a book and open himself up to a thousand new worlds.

Artturo perez-reverte. S books are amassing and brilliant . The best is El club Dumas.

Wonderful story.

Forever Amber" by Kathleen Winsor is one of my must-reads. This book was published in the 1940s and promptly banned for its lusty heroine who sleeps her way to the top of Restoration England, becoming the mistress to the king. Despite the title character's selfish behavior and tendencies toward immorality, you find yourself pulling for her - especially since, as the reader, you know the backstory that makes the central love story (note, NOT between Amber and the king) so heartbreakingly tragic.

This book epitomizes historical romance (but with enough grisly details of the plague outbreak to satisfy less romance hungry readers).

Vince Flynn! Sheer excitement and very timely! Makes you wish that someone Mitche Rapp was actually out there.

Read the books in order if you can. You don't have to but it makes the reading more fun as one story progreeses into the other and they also reference past situations. On a lighter vein, try Clive Cussler for pure fun with a bit of historical fiction thrown in for kicks.

Dirk Pitt, is a Saturday matinee in print. Picture Indiana Jones in the water. Lots of fun to read.

My favorite author is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle because I like so much Sherlock Holmes. Very Good! :).

My favorite author is Shakespeare. I love all of his plays, especially "Macbeth" and "Romeo and Juliet. " Aside from that obvious answer, however, I loved Flann O'Brien's "The Third Policeman," Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables," Elizabeth Kostova's "The " and Ken Jennings's "Brainiac.

My favorite author is J.R.R. Tolkien. I first read The Hobbit when I was about 13, and read the Trilogy in the next few years. I tried reading the Silmarillion then, but it was really over my head.

His masterpiece, and my favorite book of all time, is titled "Gravity's Rainbow", and is a stunning literary tour de force.

For my other predictions, read this answer: http://www.amazon.

Com1 For Paul Auster material, walk to the nearest bookstore or library and grab "Moon Palace". Don't thank me.

My favorite author is Lois Duncan.

Joyce Carol Oates I love the dark reality of her writing. My favorite JCO book is entitled "You Must Remember This." She is also incredibly gifted at writing short stories.

Rowling is my favorite author. I give her highest marks for bringing something to the medium that few other authors can: young readers, lots and lots of young readers.

If you can teach a child to appreciate literature over movies and video games, then you've opened up their world to all of the other great writers that have come before her. J.K. Rowling has made reading accessible and fun. She paints worlds with her words.

I guarantee a child can finish and want to read more of her books before they even want to tackle Dostoevsky, Shakespere, and the likes. J.K. Rowling is my favorite author.

"Forever Amber" by Kathleen Winsor is one of my must-reads.

His lead character, Dirk Pitt, is a Saturday matinee in print.

Picture Indiana Jones in the water. Lots of fun to read. Sheer excitement and very timely!

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
