I love road trips, but I can't afford them on a regular basis. I am notorious for my tightwad trips. Unlike myself, I am sure you and your family don't have the desire to live out a car for 4 days, so I have a few tips that might help.
Plan the day and time you leave strategically. We always arrange for at least one of the drivers to sleep many hours before the time we leave. This will allow for some night time driving. So, when you get to your first destination, you can be there in the morning.
Rather than driving in, and have to get a room directly at night. Find a hotel chain that gives free night stays after so many visits, lets kids stay free and provides a free breakfast. Even the time I had a continental breakfast it had hot foods, muffins, cereal, yogurt and so forth.
For a family of 4, getting that breakfast free can save you a great deal. Don't just show up at the hotel and ask for a room. You can make arrangement ahead of time (which I don't think is a good idea when it comes to road trips).
Always ask ahead of time what the room cost. Then say it's a bit more than you expect, can they give you a better deal. Map out activities that are fun, but free.
You will be surprised at the amount of free activities and sites that are available. Just throwing one in here and there could save you a great deal of cash. National Parks can be fun and free.
Take your own drinks and snacks. Just by taking your own drinks you can save a ton of money. This is a big one.
I also recommended taking along some snacks. You could always have some power bars, granola bars, pop tarts, etc.. This could cut out on a meal. You could also have a picnic in a park to avoid eating out one day if possible.
Sometimes I can eat out cheaper though. The last road trip we took, we had an awesome ruby tuesday coupons|Ruby Tuedays coupon. A meal for 3 people ended up being less than 20.00 including the tip!
I have another tip about eating out. When we were on that 4 day road trip, we ate out one night at a restaurant that offered free bread. The waitress brought us out some fresh biscuits before we left.
We got a to go box, got some package jam and ate them later for a meal. Like I said, tightwads. My best friend and I drove from Kentucky to Salem, Massachusetts, then to Niagara Falls, Toronto, Canada, Detroit and all the way down to Mexico. We then circled back up through Mississippi and Memphis, Tennessee to come home.
Over 6,000 miles in 4 1/2 days.It was awesome, expect for the rest stop near the Mexican boarder, the scary city in Mexico and the "fake" interstate ramp in Detroit. It was great, but we sure did look rough! (notice the same outfit in the U.S., Canada and Mexico) I hope you and your family enjoy it to the fullest!
I think the best way to save money is to simply arrive at your destination as quickly as you can. If you have two drivers, you may be able to complete your journey in fewer days. Fewer days mean fewer hotel stays, and I've found that paying to stay in a hotel or motel can be one of the more expensive parts of the road trip.
I'd also recommend packing your own snacks from a grocery store rather than paying the mark-up charged at gas stations and convenience stores. The savings may not be huge, but it all adds up.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
