Can a cat with megacolon that poops outside the box be helped?

We've done everything: low residue food, lactulose, miralax, cisapride, etc. She's had obstipation twice. She pooped inappropriately for 2 years before the vet figured out it was megacolon. For awhile she went back to her litterbox but she's back to pooping everywhere and we have 2 small children.

I can't seem to get the megacolon under control - the poops are still hard and infrequent. She's 12 years old and doesn't go outside. If we did a colonectomy she'd have a loose stool and that would be a disaster with the litterbox issues.

I'm worried that euthanizing is the only choice but it makes me feel like such a bad person and it would crush the boys who really love her. But I can't keep her locked up and spend every other day cleaning up poop. Help.

Please don't put her down just yet. I know you've likely tried every diet possible....have any included Science Diet? They make both dry and canned food for nearly every health issue in cats and dogs.

Also, please try LaxAire....a tube of, evidently, good-tasting gel that acts as a lubricant. I've been giving it to my cats twice weekly for many years, just to keep the hair blockages from forming. I know it might not sound appealing to you, but get a number of litter boxes and place them around the house, particularly in any of the places she seems to dump most often.

Put her poop in them so she might be drawn back to that area. I know, I know...I'm probably grasping at straws to convince you not to put her down just yet. Please, give it a little more time.

You know in your heart she's absolutely worth it.

2 Many cats diagnosed with megacolon do not respond adequately to the treatments you've tried, and surgery becomes the only option. A colectomy, or removal of the colon is performed. In general, the prognosis is favorable, although some cats may experience diarrhea for weeks to months after the surgery.

If she turns out to be one of those cats who do have diarrhea for a relatively short time after the surgery, and you love her enough--please put-up with the annoyance for that period of time! It will go away. She loves you!

She can't help being sick any more than a person can. She didn't get it just to annoy you, and she deserves every chance you can give her. This user has been banned from Askville.

5 Bless you for working so hard to help your megacolon kitty! I know how frustrated you must be by now. I do have a couple of suggestions.

First of all, if you haven't already done this, try to have her evaluated by a veterinary gastrologist. The best place to find a vet who specializes in animals with megacolon is to check out the nearest university veterinary school. If there is anything cutting-edge available, you are most likely to be able to find it or find out about it at a vet school.

Second, are you a member of the Yahoo group for feline megacolon? There are hundreds of members, and if you are not already a member, I urge you to join! I haven't had a cat with megacolon, but I have been a member of several other Yahoo cat specialty groups (like one for owners of FIV+ cats), and I found being able to be in touch with many people who were dealing with the same issues I was to be invaluable.

Several times I learned about a new way to treat a complication from FIV from others on the list, and then took that information to my vet, and was able to try out remedies that were not yet widely known. (I do have an understanding vet, lol! ) At any rate, here is the link to get to the group: groups.yahoo.com/group/Feline_Megacolon/I commend you for doing everything you have already done to help your kitty!

I hope you can find a way to avoid having to euthanize her, but if it comes to that, please don't be hard on yourself about it: you have already done so much more, and put up with so much more, than many cat owners would! Your kitty has been lucky to have you for her mama. :)Take care,Katherine .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
