Do you believe Islam is a violent religion?

The response to the verses while taking context, order of events in consideration:Quran (2:244) - Fight in God’s cause is in reference to several things including liberation of the oppressed, meaning the helpless men and women who are yearning and praying for freedom. Freedom from the oppression that Muslims were facing from the Meccan tribes and freedom of speech in doing Dawah i.e. Spreading the word of Islam.

If you read the islamic history, you will realize that Muslims were persecuted, humiliated, harassed and tortured to death for no other crime but choosing to believe in the one creater... Women and black people were the most abused believers -Look up 'Bilal' and 'Somia om Amar bin Yasser'. This does NOT refer to fighting and killing innocents. As Quran says:Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors.(PICKTHAL Translation, Quran 2:190)Fighting is ordained for Muslims in order to defend themselves and their rights, as well as the rights of others.

The obligation to physically defend one’s rights. It is sufficient to quote a verse from the Qur’an in this regard:Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward.

How should ye not fight for the cause of Allah and (for the cause) of the feeble among men and of the women and the children who are crying: Our Lord! Bring us forth from out this town of which the people are oppressors! Oh, give us from thy presence some protecting friend!

Oh, give us from Thy presence some defender! Those who believe do battle for the cause of Allah; and those who disbelieve do battle for the cause of idols. So fight the minions of the devil.

Lo! The devil’s strategy is ever weak.(4:74 - 4:76)3:56, and 3:151 are talking about punishment in the afterlife for unbelievers. If you don’t believe in the Islamic account of Hell, not much to worry about, is there?

Quran (4:74) IS MISTRANSLATED ... Don't know if you know Arabic but I do and the word 'Christians is not even mentioned in there ' :S Besides you can't take 74 without linking it to 76 -found above-Dr. Maher Hathout (Hathout, Jihad vs. Terrorism; US Multimedia Vera International, 2002, p.50) comments on verse 4:76 by saying:This verse is related to the two preceding verses ) where it was stated that those who fight for God’s cause would be rewarded whether they are victorious or slain. Fighting for God’s cause includes the liberation of the oppressed, meaning the helpless who are yearning for freedom. The believers fight for God’s cause, and the disbelievers fight for the sake of their idols. An idol may be taken conceptually.

For example, evil or greed may figuratively be construed as idols.

The problem with non-Muslim "Commentators" on Islam, and the Koran, is their being "choosy" ... they being "selective" in their "out of Context" Quoting of the Koran's Stated Word ... But above all, behaving, as if they are minor Prophets ... Academically speaking ... If I were to quote the Torah or the Bible, for that matter any Religious Scripture ... I will first determine, the true "Perspective" of the Stated ... and such indeed is a difficult, and time consuming task ... Lets take your referred 2:244, you have "quoted, as usual: in isolation" ... But if you read the Koran you will note, the referred verse is preceded by verse 2:243 ... The Precedent verse, 243 ... asks the Israelite ... figuratively a thousand in number ... fleeing Egypt for fear of death, due Pharaoh's command that they be slain ... comes the verse 2:244 ... Asking ... what you have quoted ... and "labelled, as the Muslims being asked by Mohammad's God to fight in the Cause of Allah" ... against the Jews and Christians etc.. Let me teach you .. But first The Truth ... There Is One God ... Thatever since Adam, and then his Progeny ... Believers have been fighting ... meaning, "defending" their faith, hearth and kin, persecuted by the Non-Believers ... and Bani Israel know it more than the others ...The modern times problem is ... Theodore Herzl ... he was not a Prophet ... he is of the kind who led the Israelite to universal condemnation ... For there are also Believers among the Jews, who Believe ... and do not go about butchering the Philistines, or others on the basis of Racial Superiorities ... on the basis of Philosophical Theories, or Clerical Stories.shahidbukhari.hubpages.com.

The believer with the most complete faith, is the one with the best character and the best of them are those who treat their wives best. "-Prophet Muhammad. "He who sleeps with his belly full, while his neighbour is hungry, is not one of us." -Prophet Muhammad.

“Feed the hungry and visit a sick person, and free the captive, if he be unjustly confined. Assist any person oppressed, whether Muslim or non-Muslim.”-Prophet Muhammad. I do not in any way think Islam teaches violence.

YES DEFINITELY! Any religion that openly says it is OK to strap a bomb on and blow up another or kill and endanger the lives of others for their God is not a true religion and should not be permitted in society.

I believe Violence and Religion can never go hand in hand. Religion is a belief that influences and shows people the right way to live life, hence, no religion would propogate or even suggest violence of any form. Violence has no religion, it is just an activity that certain people use to take out their frustrations.

If they say they were driven to do so because of religion, then they do not know the meaning of religion in the first place.

The truth is there are violent people all over the world, despite what religion they prefer. All religions have violence (war) due to reasons such as disagreeing with another religions beliefs, etc. That being said, not all people within the religions are violent. It is just that every religion has violent people.

Consider this though:JUST A FEW VERSESThe Quran contains at least 109 verses that call Muslims to war with nonbelievers. Some are quite graphic, with commands to chop off heads and fingers and kill infidels wherever they may be hiding. Muslims who do not join the fight are called 'hypocrites' and warned that Allah will send them to Hell if they do not join the slaughter.

Quran (2:244) - "Then fight in the cause of Allah, and know that Allah Heareth and knoweth all things. " Quran (2:216) - "Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you.

But Allah knoweth, and ye know not. " Not only does this verse establish that violence can be virtuous, but it also contradicts the myth that fighting is intended only in self-defense, since the audience was obviously not under attack at the time. From the Hadith, we know that Muhammad was actually trying to motivate his people into raiding caravans with this verse.

Quran (3:56) - "As to those who reject faith, I will punish them with terrible agony in this world and in the Hereafter, nor will they have anyone to help. " Quran (3:151) - "Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority". This speaks directly of polytheists, yet it also includes Christians, since they believe in the Trinity (ie.

What Muhammad incorrectly believed to be 'joining companions to Allah'). Quran (4:74) - "Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward."

The martyrs of Islam are unlike the early Christians, led meekly to the slaughter. These Muslims are killed in battle, as they attempt to inflict death and destruction for the cause of Allah. Here is the theological basis for today's suicide bombers.
