If you've done something illegal, you can be punished by the legal system. If you do something socially unacceptable, you are punished through social rejection. If we were Christians we could just pray for forgiveness and it would all be forgotten.

However, since we don't believe in the magic no-responsibility method, we have to take actual personal responsibility when we mess up.
