Knitters: have any of you knit your own Aran sweater?

I've knit sweaters with designs and cabling before but nothing quite that complex. I have a pattern coming to me in the mail. Are there any pitfalls I should look out for?

Roughly how long did it take you? Did you enjoy it? What's your experience?

I have made a few I love knitting something challenging once in a while, and I go through different "periods" for different things. Right now, it's lace, but a couple of years ago, it was Aran patterns. I made 3 sweaters and a beautiful cardigan.

Two of them (the cardigan and one sweater) were from patterns, the other two from combinations from a book I can't recommend enough to those who want to try something original: The Harmony Guide to Aran and Fair Isle Knitting. It has different pattern for different number of stitches and rows and it explains how to combine different patterns for the number of stitches you need for your sweater and gauge. Aran is not all that difficult, if you know how to do cable, you shouldn't have any problems. It just requires more concentration.

I would recommend that you make a photocopy of the chart and mark it row by row as you work so you can easily see where you are, even if you put your work down. Check every couple of rows to make sure your pattern is right, it is very easy to see if you make a mistake, and not all that hard to fix if you didn't get too far. I really hope you will love it as much as I do.

Next step: Fair Isle. I have downs some fairly complicated patterns in several colors, including a horse's head on a sweater that required as many as 10 different colors running at the same time, and also some simple Fair Isle patterns on hat, 6 to 12 rows, but I'd like to try a sweater in a real Fair Isle all-over pattern one of these days. Maybe when I get tired of lace... Happy Knitting!

It all depends on the knitter. For me I've been knitting for 5 years seriously and it took me a week to finish the sweater. I only spent 3-4 hours a day on it and was watching tv at the same time so I'm not sure how long it'd take anyone else.

The pitfalls of these things are to get the stitches right along the arms, you can mess up a few and make it look weird at one part. Always double check you're doing it right along this area. I enjoyed my experience but hey thats because I was watching TV and other various things.

1 I've never done one but they are just a specific combination of stitches. I would think as with any other complex pattern that keeping track of the number of stitches and the specific sections of patterns would be very important. Let me know how it goes.

Oh perhaps even working a sample would help you get a feel for the design.

2 I've done an afghan full of samples of various stitches before. So, I'm ok with keeping track of stitches. I'll see if I can put up some pictures when I finally get it done.

I'll definitely let you know how it goes.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
