My male cat urinates on the basement floor, often against the outside of the litter box - help! I have two cats - one male and one female. Both are 11 years old and neutered/spayed.

Since moving to a new house early last year, my male cat has taken to peeing at various spots in the basement. He has maybe 6 or 7 different areas he goes in, including against the *outside* of litter boxes, or against the wall. So far I've tried cleaning the litter boxes regularly, adding additional litter boxes (currently have 3) changing litters, cleaning the floor, but nothing works.

It's new to me. The previous owner did have a cat who I know "owned" the basement - I found a few mummified deposits here and there when I moved in. I figured he's marking it as his own, but no amount of new can litter boxes, changing litters, cleaning the flow, enzymatic cleaners, etc.Seem to change his behavior.

In my last house he had a somewhat similar issue, but in a smaller space (a half bathroom). It seems behavioral - no vet has ever found anything physically wrong. I'm wondering if there's anything I've not already tried that could change the behavior.

If not I'll probably need to section off part of the basement to limit his access so I at least have less to clean! MarCow 1 month ago .

Gosh, and you've been doing all the right things. You could try using upside down clear plastic carpet runner (the ones with the spikes on the bottom) or aluminum foil. Cut pieces to put in the s pots where he likes to pee and spray them with Scratch Not.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried aluminum foil, and also putting things in the way of the areas he uses so he can't get to them. The problem is that the basement is fairly large, and as soon as I cover up one area he just goes in another.

This is what makes me think my only option may be to cordon off part of the basement, and just accept the fact that this area is essentially his litter tray. I'd love to find another solution though - I don't really want to design my basement around a cat's refusal to use a litter tray! MarCow 1 month ago .

I suspect cordoning off the area is your best bet, at least he's not messing around in the main part of the house! I think he feels threatened by the old cat/cats that lived there and thinks he needs to keep marking his territory.

Yes - that's exactly what I was thinking, although in our previous house there were no cats beforehand (it was an old house but renovated down to the studs), and he picked the downstairs bathroom in that case. There could have been other cat smells from before the reno though, or he just doesn't like litter boxes. Anyway - thanks for the responses.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
