Use a topical insecticide on your roommate's cat. No, don't spray Fluffy with Raid. Use a topical flea killer like Frontline's Top Spot. It's safe -- it's been used to kill potato beetles for decades -- and effective.
It will quickly kill all the fleas on the cat, all the fleas in your house, and shortly thereafter, all the fleas in your yard. Sources: 0fleas.com/FrontlinePayPal.htm .
Salt I have heard that putting salt in your carpet will dry them out and then they can be vacuumed up with the salt. Borax is also supposed to work well, you just sprinkle it on the carpet, wait a couple of days then vacuum it all up. Some people swear by a combination of both, first sprinkle both, leave it on overnight, vacuum, then the next night sprinkle salt again, vacuum the next morning.
Place dishes of water under lamps, fleas are attracted to the light and when they jump for the light, they fall into the water and drown, Ive also read that lemon dawn dish detergent in the water works well, you don't always need the light. They are attracted to white socks, white clothes etc. I have also heard you can sprinkle baking soda, but I don't know anybody that has tried this yet. You might have to repeat these processes a few times, as new cycles hatch but it should get rid of them without toxic sprays.
One thing I read online said to grind the salt in the blender till powdery, leave it on for a week but not to go barefoot, it might irritate your feet. Vacuum it up in 7-10 days, throw away the vacuum bag and the bugs should be gone..
De-flea the pet, clean, vacuum, spray. ehow.com/how_16644_rid-home-fleas.htmlIn... only are fleas pesky to your pet, but they can invade your home and torment human hosts with annoying bites. Getting rid of fleas requires diligence, patience and time - generally several weeks.
InstructionsStepsStep OneGet rid of fleas on your pet. (See "How to Get Rid of Fleas. ") Fleas usually come into your home on the body of a warm-blooded creature such as your dog or cat, then multiply.
Step TwoReligiously clean surfaces where your dog or cat spends the most time. These are the areas where fleas, eggs, larvae and pupae are most likely to be found. This includes cleaning concrete floors in basements and garages.
Step ThreeVacuum carpets thoroughly and often. Even if you already have an active infestation, vacuuming can pick up adult fleas as well as pupae. Step FourUse flea granules in the nap of your carpet.
These can be applied once a year and remain active for the whole year. They are safe and effective. Step FiveSpray carpets with an insecticide such as micro-encapsulated pyrethrins.
Repeated applications may be necessary. Use chemicals with caution and read labels carefully. Step SixCombine the insecticide (which will kill adult fleas) with a growth regulator, which will break the life cycle of the flea.
Follow directions carefully. Step SevenSee "How to Get Rid of Fleas From Your Home Naturally" under Related eHows for information on using nonchemical methods for flea control. Step EightCall a pest control company if your efforts are unsuccessful.
Such companies are well-equipped to deal with flea infestations. Tips & Warnings* Fleas are at their worst in summer and early fall, so start your flea prevention tactics in late spring. * Adult fleas are the least of your problem.
Eggs can be virtually anywhere, and larvae and pupae are also difficult to find and eliminate. * Use exterior flea-control methods also. No matter how much time you spend ridding the house of fleas, they will get back in if you haven't treated your yard and other surrounding areas.
* Before using any toxic pest control product, read the label carefully. Be especially wary if you have young children or pets in the home. * Avoid shutting a room off for a period of time in the hope that the fleas inside will die off due to lack of a host.
This method is not effective. http://www.ehow.com/how_4033_rid-home-fleas.htmlHow to Rid Your Home of Fleas NaturallyIntroductionEvery summer the fleas return, hitching a ride indoors on your unsuspecting pet. Try these non-toxic ways to take back your home from those little bloodsuckers.
InstructionsDifficulty: StepsStep OneVacuum all carpets and furniture at least twice a week, even before you spot a flea. Physical removal of the eggs, larvae and adult insects is the safest way to keep flea populations under control. Step TwoPay special attention to high-traffic areas, such as stairs and those places where your pet spends a lot of time--for example, next to the bed or under a favorite chair.
Step ThreeEmpty, dispose of, or seal off the vacuum bag every time you vacuum. Adult fleas can easily crawl back out. Step FourWash area rugs and floor mats regularly with hot water or in the washing machine.
Dry each thoroughly to avoid creating a perfectly humid breeding ground for the prolific bugs. Step FiveMake your own flea remedy by mixing 3 cups diatomaceous earth (DE) for every 1/2 cups boric acid. Sprinkle the powder lightly, yet thoroughly over carpet, under beds and in closets while wearing a safety mask to avoid inhaling the dust.
With a broom, work the granules deeply into the carpet. Vacuum after two days. Step SixTry an alternative recipe using 8 parts cleaning powder to 1 part table salt.
Follow the above procedure, except you should vacuum after 1 week. These powders work by drying out the fleas' habitat and dehydrating both the larvae and adults. Step SevenSprinkle DE in pet runs and shady areas in the yard where pets frequent to keep outdoor populations down.
Fleas can only survive in moist, shady areas, so there is no need to apply the powder in places hit by direct sunlight. Step EightIntroduce the beneficial nematode Steinernema carpocapsa to your yard by using a spray available for purchase at your garden store or online. These tiny parasitic worms feed on and destroy flea larvae.
Again spray only in shady areas. Reapply if further infestation occurs. Tips & Warnings* To avoid frequent infestations, both home and pets must be treated simultaneously.
Start your pet on a natural flea control program now. * Flea bombs and house sprays with the natural toxin pyrethrin do exist. When used properly they are considered safe and effective, but these products are toxic and should be used only as a last resort.
* Although not poisonous, the powders should not be applied while pets or infants are present, nor should small children be allowed to play on the carpets until after the residual dust has been vacuumed up. Extra caution should always be applied when using any pest control measure in households where children, elderly people or persons with a history of respiratory illness reside.
