Why is my cat peeing right outside the litter box?!?!?! I have 3 cats: 10 year old girl; 6 year old boy; 1 year old girl. A few months ago, I noticed a pee spot on the floor next to the litter box.
I thought maybe my oldest cat, who is going blind, was missing the box, so I bought a large washable pad to put under the litter box to catch any accidents she might have. Several months went by with no problems. Then, about a month ago, I happened to walk by the litter box when my boy cat was in it, and instead of squatting to pee like he has for the past 6 years, he was standing in the corner of the litter box spraying on the side of the box and outside the box.
I thought maybe it was a fluke, but I was wrong. I have seen him do it at least 1 other time, and I have had to wash the pad 3 times because of the reoccuring pee stains. Why, after 6 years, has my cat decided that he no longer wants to pee in the litter box like he always has.
How do I make him stop peeing outside the box? Asked by boardgirl148 54 months ago Similar questions: cat peeing litter box Pets > Cats.
Get another litter box With three cats, you should have two litter boxes, even if they are right next to each other. Cats don't like to use dirty boxes and with 3 cats chances are your box is often dirty. We used to have a cat who started out squatting but as he continued to pee, he stood up and peed on the wall.
We took a second, smaller box and made a "backstop" with the smaller box on its side inside the bigger box. The pee just ran down the bottom of the backstop box and into the bigger box. Try something like that, or get an enclosed box (which has to be cleaned even more often, as the smell really builds up inside)..
This sounds like a territorial issue, but I offer hope. My husband and I love our cats. We have had the same issues you are experiencing.
Our male cat was perfectly well housetrained, until we adopted more cats. You adopted your girl a year ago, so it sounds like your male cat may be asserting his territorial rights. That's what spraying is about -- it's a particular kind of urination that (from what I know) has 'I need to mark my territory' all over it.
We had a heck of a time, and we even had to re-do a floor. However, then our wonderful vet over at Jockeyport Veterinary told us about Fellaway. It replicates the ferimones found in the sent glands on cats' chins -- a 'happy' smell.
The product comes in infusers that you plug in (like those air fresheners) and in a spray form. When we keep the Fellaway plugged in and make sure to change the litter regularly, we have no problems. The cats also fight less and generally seem more contented.

1 Keep the box clean. You also need to have atleast 4 litter boxes. A minium of 1 pan for each cat plus one extra.
This may help a lot. It often does. Otherwise using the pad like your using is a good solution even though it might be a bit of a pain to clean, its far eaiser to clean than to clean stuff elsewhere in the home..

Poppet! Said: 2 This is something I saw my male cat do when he was first diagnosed with diabetes....you might want to get him checked. They drink alot and consequently have to go alot...maybe he has a problem?

3 I have one HUGE litter box (its actually one of those under the bed storage boxes, about 1'x3', if I were guessing), and then I added two other regular litter boxes, and I clean them all twice a day, once before I go to work and once when I get home. When I added the two other boxes, I moved them all to a different area of the room. I wonder if that has something to do with it.....

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
