How does the whole flush the toilet and it heats up the shower thing work?

I am pretty sure that most people have this problem in their bathroom, and if you don't, I do. I was just wondering, what does the toilet do to heat up the shower so much? Simple arithmetic: warm water minus cold water equals hot water! When you run the shower, you draw both hot and cold water to make a nice warm shower with plenty of water pressure. When someone flushed the toilet, it refills the tank with cold water.

If you haven't got plenty of water pressure, the sudden demand for cold water to fill the tank decreases the amount of cold water available for the shower. Since the hot water still flows at the same rate, but with less cold water, you suddenly have a very hot shower.

Worst in a college dorm... In a typical home, the pipes deliver equal pressure of hot and cold water to the plmbing fixtures. You get into the shower, and adjust the valve(s) to the preferred temperature. Then someone flushes the toilet.

As the tank refills, the toilet is now using a certain amount of cold water. The pressure in the cold water pipe is rediced proportionally to the size of the toilet fill tube. As a result, less cold water forces its way through the valve in the shower, causing the shower to run hot.

(in the dorm, the shower pipe is 1/2" and the toilet pipe is an inch and a half, imagine the pressure drop, there) depending on the plumbing, anything in the house can potentially cause a drop in the cold water pressure. Current building codes require the installation of a shower control that automatically compensates for this phenomenon. The most popular have a pressure balancing system, that reacts to a reduction in pressure on one side of the control, by restricting the other side to match.

Here's how it happens... While you're taking a shower, you have the hot and cold water temperature balanced just right. The water in each pipe is holding at a certain constant pressure. Then, someone flushes the toilet.

Suddenly, the toilet is drawing cold water to refill it's tank. That lessens the pressure in the cold water pipe...soooo In the shower, the pressure in the hot water pipe stays constant...but the pressure in the cold water pipe reduces...and less cold water is mixing with the hot...and you get a hotter shower. At our house, it's just the opposite...I'm enjoying a nice hot shower and someone decides to use the hot water in the kitchen to wash a dish...they take the hot water pressure away from the shower....brrrrr...a cold blast of water.

Diversion. If your shower water is running at medium warm, it is a mix of both hot and cold water. When you flush the toilet, cold water is diverted to fill the toilet tank- maybe 2 gallons or more.

With that much cold water removed from the mix you have already running, it leaves mostly the hot water running to the shower- for a minute or so. Just a guess......... The water is coming out of the same tank at the same time. When you flush the toilet (which is cold water), right at the same time, the water going in the shower is more hot water. So flushing doesn't heat up the water, it takes the cold out of it.

Again, just my guess.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
