IIRC, self rising flour has salt and baking powder mixed in (or baking soda, I never remember which) so if the recipe you are making does not have both of those ingredients, then self rising flour will change the recipe.
The flour has to rise any way it may n ot be a bad idea But normally you might want to use what the recipe calls for just to be safe.
Thanks for info I would have used what it called for but I ran out making smores treetrucker 1 month ago .

Self-rising" will have the leavening included in the flour, much like Bisquick does. Thus, when you add more leaven, you will get either a puffier item or a flatter item, depending on whether it rose more with more gas/air or rose so much that the gas/air popped and the thing collapsed, never to rise again. Generally, the leaven prescribed in the recipe is that amount that produces the desired puffiness.
The limitation on that is that if the leaven/yeast is older, it won't work as well and more might be required. This leads to the question to you: How old is that self-rising flour? Yes, just reduce the salt and baking powder recipe calls for. Yahoo has a lot on this subject. I found that out that self-rising flour is an all-purpose flour with salt and leavening already added.
One cup of self-rising flour contains 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Self-rising can be substituted for all-purpose flour in a recipe by reducing salt and baking powder according to these proportions. Check out the site for a variety of answers on how to use self rising flour instead of all purpose flour.

3 Thanks for adding more Pam...If I am not mistaken, cookies made with self rising flour, instead of AP as most recipes call for, will have less spread and more rise to them. However, they are still delicious and will disappear not long after being removed from the oven.
