I read a book as a kid and can't remember the title, does anyone have any ideas on how I can find the title?

It was a book about two kids, a brother and sister, that go to an island that is haunted. They got to the island in a canoe and it was old and sank before they could get to the island and they had to swim (I think). There is a ghost dog and a ghost guy and they try to figure out why they are on the island.

The heroine's mother is a prostitute and the heroine is not a virgin but I don’t remember if she’s a prostitute or not. Her mother died and she has a younger brother she takes care of. To escape her life because some unwanted man is pursuing her she answers to the Mail-Order and she says she's Swedish and she can cook etc.So she and her brother leave.

I can find the title I know the basic plot of the book, but I can't remember the name. I only read an excerpt. But if anyone can help me PLEASE!

This is what I remember:There is an heiress that is considered ugly and plain and utterly forgettable, she overhears a conversation between two lords about how there parents will no longer be footing there bills and they must marry an heiress if they are to live within there means. She decides to propose a solution for one, and asks him to meet her on the balcony/terrace and asks him if he will pretend to pay court to her so everyone else will follow his lead, and she will be willing to pay him handsomely for it. I believe that he tries to kiss her or pull her into his arms, but I am not sure.

I know that she was an heiress to something they considered in the trade. The book took place in the 19th century, I know that they are at a ball when this happens. I believe the popular debutante is openly hostile and mean to her and couple of other girls.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
