askville.amazon.com/raccoons-make-pets/A... an answer is not always so clear or easy but I cannot honestly accept the rating of 2.8 for my answer to "Do raccoons make good pets?" I gave it much thought and was on topic saying 'No' to them as pets stating also that they can transmit diseases, etc. My answer was done with care and correctness and was originally given 3.0 rating which I appealed then ended up with 2.8! In my opinion any rating below 3.0 is for those who are careless, wrong, or offensive.
I don't see that I was any of these things, so I am puzzled by such a low rating. I suppose this is a matter of "how to" rate a question basically and can only ask, what is wrong with the system that marks a good answer as being so below par? Is this fair?
I don't think so. I can only repeat what another Askv. Member asked, "How does one get a fair deal when answering a question?"

Ok, Im a little nervouse to answer this question due to what happen with...........You know! I do have what I would call experience, sort of. About 10 years ago I moved to the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
A very small town. When I say small I mean small. No stop light!
Anyway, shortly after moving here I noticed I was getting frequent visits on my deck from racoons. I started putting treats out for them, they love sweets, cookies, marshmellows etc,. Then I started leaving the door open and putting their treats just inside the threshold.
Then I red an article how they like to wash their food before they eat it. The next night I put out a bowl of water with their treats. I was fasinated watching these so called 'wild' animals.
They were so cute with their little faces and delicate hands. They would take a treat and gently roll it around in the bowl of water before eating it. Then when they were finished, they would mosey on their way, with my disapointment they didn't stay longer.
Shortly after this started I shared my story at a dinner party, thinking everyone would say 'oh, how cute'. Well, it was nothing like that. Everyone said I was Crazy.
They said raccoons were one of the most vicouse animals. Their cute little hands have razor sharp nails and those cute little mouths have razor sharp teeth. They will distroy property and kill small pets.
BEWARE they said. Well in my head I was thinking 'you guys are crazy. Raccoons are so cute they couldnt hurt anything'.
But, needless to say they scared the crap out of me with their comments, so, that was the end of my raccoon feeding.
It seems a bit weird, but then you have no control over who votes for what, when There are the fellow voters, there is the person who answered the Q, who gets to vote, then the people who get the appeal, who might have no clue. Indeed, many of us have no clue! I know cause dad had his raccoon Pirate for 12 years, from infancy, and I deal with wild ones every week at my brother's.
Yes, there ARE germs! No, they are NOT good pets. I guess we can't have an appeal of an appeal.... But basically, people are voting on things they don't know for sure/are just offering opinions on.
Your disease point is a good one and I thought your answers generally are too! Good luck! .
I would have gave you 4 stars: But I would not take this as a personal dis-appreciation of your efforts and I would not let it negatively influence you on future answers. The other answers were typically the same and offered pretty much the same advice as you did, except the person that got 2 stars, which I would have gave only 1 star. The question itself was not much of a challenge anyway.
Anyone could have gotten away with 4 stars or better for less effort than you gave as did the person who got the best answer. Actually, you should have gotten the best answer (in my opinion),but maybe you should choose better questions that really challenge and your efforts rewarded better. Having said that, other than the accumulation of stars and getting on AOTD,there is not much rewards to any efforts.
But that should not make you decrease efforts. I will look to see if I can see you on AOTD for best answers! Sources: :) .
Personally, I think you usually get a pretty fair deal here, but ratings are opinion I took a look at the answer and I'd say your answer was showrt and sweet, and you had a good picture, but otherwise, all opinion, which made it a 3 or maybe a 4. If you had referenced this webpage exoticpets.about.com/cs/raccoons/a/racco... Raccoons as Pets What to Expect from a Pet Raccoon From Lianne McLeod, DVM That might have been helpful. Since your answer references the fact that you never considered them as URL2 main thing in rating and doing appeals here is that the answers are much much above the garbage you see at Yahoo Naswers.
I thought yours was just ok. I realize that, this answer, too, is nothing more than opinion, but from one that has done a lot of answers on Askville Sources: me .
Conjecture suggests... That we got what we wished for. There are a lot of us who remember the good old days, before Bonus Questions, before political rancor threatened to demolish this place, before we had or needed much in the way of moderation. The days when most of the action here was in the answer slots, not the discussion boards, and people were doing the same kind of petty points gaming you're seeing now.
Apparently, the new bling and awards have enticed people back to the answer slots. And back to the same silly competitition for relatively meaningless acclaim. How many Best Answers do you want to get in December?
How far are you willing to go to win that competition? Not you personally - in the rhetorical sense. You gave a pretty good anwer to the question.
I liked it. I didn't get to vote on it, or I'd have done you better. I hope that veterans like us can reclaim the good old days - and perhaps make the good new days better than they actually were.

Do you think it's unfair that Oldppie has the question of the week in the Askville Gazette when he isn't on their.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
